Any ideas for encouraging Indexing in the stake? What about encouraging use of the Get Involved app for smartphone or Get Involved on the FamilySearch website?

      @Mary Louise Lillian

      Good afternoon:

We did several things on this front.

      1. We had a 5th Sunday lesson from our Indexing Missionaries and Ward FamilySearch Consultants (includes RS Presidency and EQ Presidency) . To explain the method and importance of indexing.

      2. Try creating an indexing group within your ward members. This may create a little bit of excitement in your ward and help to get them involved in indexing.

How do I create an indexing group?

Anyone can create indexing groups to help people collaborate with each other in their indexing efforts. Subgroups can be created from a home group according to geography, age, families, interests, and so on. Anyone can create a group, but only the administrator of the home group can create subgroups in the home group. The group administrator is also the only one who can delete the group.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are automatically assigned to a stake and ward group when they sign in to Indexing.

      Steps

      1. Make sure that you are signed in. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Get Involved.
      2. Click Indexing.
      3. Scroll down to the Group section.
      4. Click Find Groups.
      5. In the drop-down, click Create Group. The group form is displayed.
      6. Fill out the group profile.
      7. Click Save.

      When you are finished

Invite potential group members to join the group:

      • Send an invitation through the messaging system in indexing to potential group members. To do this, you need to know their FamilySearch profiles.
      • Have potential group members find and join the group on the Indexing section of FamilySearch. It will help if you can tell them the name of the group.
      • Send an email to potential group members that contains a link to the group page. (Copy the URL from the address bar of the browser. It starts with https://www.familysearch.org/indexing/groups/. . . . )

How do I invite people to join an indexing group?

Group administrators can invite others to join an indexing group or subgroup. Invitation-only groups require an invitation directly from the group administrator in order to join.

Note: Church membership records determine ward and stake indexing groups. Church members who participate in indexing are added automatically. Group administrators can invite members of the public to join the ward or stake group as needed to provide help or improve communication among all of the people working together on a project.

      Before you start

Obtain the FamilySearch profile of each person you want to invite.

      Steps

      1. Sign in to FamilySearch.
      2. At the top of the screen, click Get Involved.
      3. Click Indexing.
      4. Scroll down to the Groups section.
      5. Click the name of the group.
      6. Click Options.
      7. Click Manage Members.
      8. Click Invitations.
      9. In the To field, enter the profile of each person that you want to invite. Put a comma between each name.
      10. Click Send.

If you do not know profiles

      • Have potential subgroup members find and join the group on the Indexing section of FamilySearch. It will help if you can tell them the name of the group.
      • Send an email to potential subgroup members with a link to the group page. (Copy the URL from the address bar of the browser. It starts with https://www.familysearch.org/indexing/groups/. . . . )

As a follow up to my original question:

Our stake has Indexing Weekend annually. We send out emails, posters, and handouts to encourage stake members to do indexing during a particular weekend (often just before stake conference). Since there are so few English indexing projects at this time, we changed the title to Stake FamilySearch Weekend. The emails, posters, handouts, and announcements all suggested a few ways for members to participate: Indexing, Get Involved app, ordinances ready or add to your family tree. I have heard from members throughout the stake who did something on FamilySearch during the weekend. Many are using Get Involved on computer or app and finding it easy to fit in to busy schedules. The weekend was a success!
