Jakub Nerczyński and Marianna Goszczyńska-Duszyńska: Are they related?
Hello,
Given the following situation and document trail, how confident (or skeptical) should I be that Marianna Goszczyńska-Duszyńska is the niece of Jakub Nerczyński? (References are provided for completeness; I do not need transitions of the documents.)
I have a death record of Józef Michał de Goszczeński Duszyński (1). Reporting the death was Kajetan Kowalewski. The death record specifically states that the deceased was the nephew (son of the sister) of Jakub Nerczyński (the Chojne Parish priest).
I have the Marriage record of Kajetan Kowalewski and Marianna Goszczyńska (2) (Marianna Duszyńska in other records). Jakub Nerczyński was in attendance at the wedding, and he also baptized their fist son (3).
In summary; Józef Michał de Goszczeński Duszyński was the nephew of Jakub Nerczyński. Is it safe then to assume that Marianna Goszczyńska (aka Duszyńska) was Jakub Nerczyński’s niece? Marianna clearly knew Jakub Nerczyński well; but she is never specially called out as being his niece. I unfortunately lack any documentation regarding the names of Marianna’s parents.

This is a difficult question, and you are probably the best judge in deciding if Jakub Nerczynski and Marianna Goszczynska-Duszynska are related.
As you enter the information about each one of them into a family tree from all the records where their names are mentioned, hopefully you will be able to identify their relationship. You can do it.

In looking at the documentation, including the death records of Jakub Nerczyński (Metryki) and of his brother Błażej Nerczyński (relation mentioned in his death record), it appears that the two brothers were born in Goszczanów. I was unfortunately unable to find a sister to Jakub and Błażej, as that would hopefully provide you with the line to descend to Józef Michał de Goszczeński Duszyński and hopefully to Marianna de Goszczyńska Duszyńska. There are records of births for Goszczanów, where it's possible they could be born with "de Goszczyńska/Goszczeński" as part of their name, available online at FamilySearch. I believe you will have to view them at a FamilySearch center or affiliate library. Good luck trying to prove this relationship!
