This was a good webinar to attend in learning how the Missouri State Archives uses volunteers to help index their records in order make records available to the public.
They have one project online for help, but for the others they create a zip-file of images and email the file and detailed instructions to their volunteers. The volunteers use an Excel spreadsheet to gather the information and then send it all back to be added to the archive database.
A good discussion was given about how to work with volunteers.
- Be clear and specific about instructions
- Have patience with volunteers as they may be just learning new technology
- Have fun. Any progress is a gain. It is a marathon, not a sprint.
- Once a project is completed, and before it is open to the public online, let the volunteers see what they have worked hard on to accomplish.
