Catholic Clergy Records - Bari, Italy
Hi, I'm trying to verify if a family member was a Bishop or a Priest in Bari, Italy, Where can I find this information? Looking to verify Francesco Neglia of Bari, Italy as a priest or a Bishop. I have found multiple newspaper records citing the name "Neglia" as an apostolic nuncio, but can only verify the name Meglio. Crazy to say....could his name have been mispelled THAT many times?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

We can definitely know that your Francesco Neglia was not a bishop, as the bishops of the Catholic Church are well documented on sites like http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/ and others, and there is no match.
To see if he was a priest is much more difficult as there is no centralized database of priests. In fact, doing genealogy for priests is quite difficult since unlike the general population, priests did not marry nor have children. The only practical way to confirm that your family member is a priest is to find his death record, which will provide his parents' names, allowing you to prove he is your family member, and also mention his profession as a priest. There may be ordination records held by the local diocesan archive, Bari in your case, but these would only be accessible in person, if they even exist (depending on the time period you're interested in).
