Is there a way to see a listing of parishes in North Yorkshire that may have surviving Parish chest
Joseph's marriage allegation in 1780 shows him as a militiaman, age 24. And he is on a militia list in Capt Teravis's company in 1799. After that, he is shown as a bootmaker in Scarborough in 1823. He dies there in 1827, age 79. I think he is related to the "Lockton Merrys" but he is NOT the Joseph MERRY baptized there (also recorded Middleton) Oct 31, 1757.

Yes, Linda. I have seen that Norwich baptism but I have not run it out to see if I can develop a family group there. I do think it's a bit of a jump; but it is worth a look, and I need to do that so thank you for giving me that nudge.
Some additional detail on Joseph's family that links him to the Lockton group is that his grandchildren are found in the 1841 census living in Scarborough and living with a sister of his daughter, Mary's husband. The children are shown as scholars, and right down the road from where they are living is a school run by a William Merry, headmaster. This William Merry connects to the Lockton Merrys. I think the children were attending this school.

I have a number of branches in my ancestry that came from north Yorkshire. I have found the best source for parish register material to be Find My Past. However, it is quite possible (as suggested) that Joseph came from elsewhere in England.
I did find some missing ancestors / relatives when I recently took out a short-term subscription to FMP, but others remain elusive. There are inevitably gaps in years covered by many of the registers, or you might be unfortunate in that your Joseph Merry's baptism just didn't get recorded!
Lists of parishes would probably not be as useful as you might think, as they often omit the fact that the registers are incomplete - perhaps just a couple of years missing, but possibly the ones vital to your searches!

Thanks for your response, Paul. What I'm really looking for is Parish CHEST materials....not Parish Registers. I have thoroughly studied those for the last 20+ years in North Yorkshire. And, I have a subscription to FMP. FamilySearch Learning portal has a very interesting webinar on the sorts of things one can find in surviving Parish CHESTS (everything from bastardly commentary, lists of Vestry members/Wardens, settlements of land disputes, poor law actions, etc.) That was the material I was searching for. There are tons of parishes in and around the area I am interested in. I was hoping I could find a listing of which parishes have surviving parish CHEST materials.

Sorry, Louise. I thought this might be a case of "mistaken terminology" and should have accepted this was what you really meant!
Previously, I found consulting the North Yorkshire Record Office Catalogue (currently at https://archivesunlocked.northyorks.gov.uk/CalmView/default.aspx) to be quite useful in this regard. However, my recent searches have proved to return quite negative results. Some years ago, I even spent a week at Northallerton (visiting both the NYRO and the Borthwick Institute at York), but was disappointed at finding little more information about my Yorkshire ancestry than had I remained in London - using the Society of Genealogists' Library and online resources!
The FamilySearch Catalog is the obvious place to locate any material that has been digitised / put online by that organisation, but I'm pretty certain it will be difficult to find any listings of parish chest material, other than might be held (perhaps only in paper form) at the NYRO at Northallerton.
No help to you, but I have been fortunate with my research into my Essex families, as the Essex R.O. catalogue is quite good and, during visits, I have been able to look at many items like those you describe - settlement certificates, bastardy bonds, local censuses, etc. A shame many county record offices are not up to the same standard.

Oh, thank you, Paul. Your journey sounds a bit like mine except my travels include a trans Atlantic flight from California! I'll take a look at the Northallerton catalog again and see if there is anything there that might be a help. Where are you searching in NYKS? I knew this Parish Chest stuff was just too good to be true. It was an interesting webinar however. Ha Ha!
