Probably. 🙂 I am not an expert, but a death certificate might be the clue you need. Do you know WHERE your grandfather was born and/or raised? His father probably died near him or in the town where he grew up. Your grandfather may have even signed his father's death certificate. If you would like to share your grandfather's ID, I would be willing to help you look.

I agree there is help for you, you just need to cast a wider net. Did your grandfather have any paternal aunts or uncles (i.e., siblings of your great-grandfather)? Research on any of them might lead you to the correct great-grandfather. Let me know if you would like some assistance.

Check all available US Censes Records, get a copy of his application for social security card.

well . . . if you can provide more specific details maybe someone here can help.
Its a lot easier to give feedback with specific hard details - versus just abstract questions.
We are happy to help. Specific details will facilitate that.
Thanks

Sorry it has taken me a while to respond, I have a lot going on and I appreciate everyone trying to help. My great-grandfather's name is John Davis. I have varying years that he was born from 1851, 1870, and his death cert has 1865. He was born in Cave City Kentucky. He lived in Louisville Kentucky until he moved to Lansing Michigan where he died in 1959. His son and my father were both only children. So aunts, uncles, and cousins were never in the picture. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I did some quick digging on Ancestry since I am more familiar with there search functions at this time. Was your great-grandfather's mother Eliza Bybee? If yes, you will find him listed in the 1870 census as Jno Bybee, 1880 census as John Bybee living with sister Fannie (husband Aaron Davis). Did he marry Mary None/Doane/Done? in 1897 in Indiana? If yes, he is listed in 1900 census in Louisville as John Davis (wife Mary Davis, son-John J Davis born abt 1898). Hope this helps. Note: this is not fully sourced.
