Adding a “new person”
This always drives me crazy 😜 sometimes it’s easy to add a person, other times it gives me this (see photo). So how do add someone who doesn’t already “exist”? Like when you click on “review and attach record”, it takes me to this screen and 🤷🏻♀️i dont know🤷🏻♀️ how to proceed cause there is no number for this person yet

It should be giving you an option to add the person too, but if it glitches and doesn't give that option, as in your pictures above, here's a workaround I use: Go back to your tree and add the person, then return to the record and add it to that person. I hope that helps! 😃

**** yeah I’ve had to do it that way before... i was hoping there would be a more streamlined way to do it lol

you should report this as a bug in feedback.
Is it an intermittent problem - or always a problem?

I don’t usually try to add new people, maybe this is why. I really don’t remember @Dennis J Yancey but I will share this with the @Community.familysearch.org Feedback community because it seems to happen every time I try

something just doesnt make sense to me.
can you give me a specific example
and the exact steps you follow
I add new people all the time - and I rarely have an issue.

Ok @Dennis J Yancey i went to search for someone who was like a grandmother to me, and when I scroll to the bottom of the record it says “review and attach record” so I click on that, and it takes me to the next screen where it shows me some of the people I’ve searched recently (not sure how it decides who to show) as options to choose from, or I can enter the persons number but the person doesn’t have a number yet so I get stuck there .... ss to follow

ok
but this is a search in historical records
you are talking about adding a person to a family within Family Tree - correct???
if that is the case - I would normally be going straight to the family in Family Tree
and clicking on "add child" "add Parent" or "add spouse"
and then after i had added them - I would do anything related to linking to historical records. . ..
I mean - yes I might be adding a child due to something I found in a historical record - - but still I go back to Family Tree- and add the person there - with the "add" option.
I think this is why "I have a disconnect" with what you are saying
because I always add to the family directly in Family Tree (not by looking for records in Historical Records)

Why does it give me the option to “review and attach” if there’s no one to attach it to? So I have to search records, write down the persons info, go into the tree, add that person using the info I have written down, then go search for them again and only then I can attach the info? I think that’s way too many steps

but most people are not taking the approach you are taking
most people already have the family like on a paper family group sheet
and are simply entering people into the family tree from paper
or other people are simply looking for documentation for people already in their family tree. its giving you the option to attach the source because it assumes this person is a person you already have in your tree - and are simply linking a primary document to that person already in the system. . .
it assumes you know who you want to attach to. - it was never designed to add a new person into family tree - - it is simply a utility for searching for people on historical records - that happens to let you also link that record to a person in the family tree - but of course that person has to exist in the tree first place.
(it has no way of knowing if the person already exists in your family tree or not - so it always asks you no matter what)
you should always add a person to the tree first

thats true. I’m still figuring out who my family members are... so maybe they should change the whole site to conform to my method right? 🤣 jkjkjk!!!

having thought about your approach though
what many people would do in your approach
would be to have two browsers open on their computer at the same time
one using the Historical Record Search and one having the Family Tree Open- both at the same time.
then they would simply toggle between the two windows.
are you doing this on your smart phone or on the computer??
I cant imagine trying to do this on a smart phone with such a small screen. going back and forth between Family Tree and Historical Records would definitely be something I would do on a full computer screen with two windows.

Lol yup I do everything on my iPhone. And I can’t have 2 browsers open cause it makes me sign in every time I switch. It’s very annoying 😂
0 -
no - you can open two tabs on a single browser and just use part of your screen for each window
so you can see each window at the same time as the other
you do not need to be logging on each time
trying to see it all on a small iphone would drive me nuts

so here is my computer screen with four windows open simultaneously
1) Family Tree 2) Historical Record Search 3) My genealogy Database 4) Google
I never have to log on more than once a session
and I can see it all 4 screens at the same time and copy and paste between screen and each screen is much larger than my smart phone

Famlysearch does have a "keep me logged on for two weeks" - so you dont have to keep logging on
but multiple sessions on an iphone - yeh - just doesnt make sense anyway
but makes perfect sense with a full computer screen

Yeah I don’t really have a decent computer... ours are all so old and outdated 😂 we’ve been using our phones most everything for so long, and don’t really have any use for pc that would justify such a purchase I do select the log in for 2 weeks lol but that never works either, prolly Cause I’m Alwyas having multiple tabs open on my phone.

thats weird - multiple tabs shouldnt force a log on.

If it isn't in the Family Tree with a number you can add it but you would be adding it to the wrong family. When you want to add it to another family that isn't the one you have up, you must remember the information and try to find a family it fits in. Not an easy task.

Familysearch never actually keeps me logged in for 2 weeks. It won't even keep me logged in for 2 hours if I get up to do something else. People have pointed this out on getsatisfaction before.
0 -
Ty @CynthiaVanDam CynthiaVanDam lol I was beginning to think it was just me and my stupid phone. I get logged out anytime I leave the screen to do something else in another tab

I’m not adding anyone to any family. I just simply want to “create” the person so I can attach the matching records to their profile ... does that make sense? Or am I way off on this one?

but everyone belongs to a family . . .
yes the very first person you add in this group may not be connected to any existing family
but after that there is a spouse, parent, child etc.
everyone is part of a family. but yes- if you want to add a person into the system and they dont have any spouse, parent, child etc (yet in the system) - then yes - you have to add the first person - and then start linking others to that person.
Keep in mind this is one massive database we are all collaboratively working on - and not just each person creating their own disjoint family tree - - - we are all working together in a database that has billions of people in a massive family tree. (though indeed you can add someone that is not connected to anyone else in the database/tree - but that is rare)
when you want to add a single person that you are not connecting to anyone in your family tree or anyone in the database - then you click on Family Tree, Tree, and "Recents" and "add unconnected person"
then as you find out more - you can add parent, sibling, spouse, child.

when you want to add a single one person into Family Tree - that you are not connecting to anyone else in your family tree or anyone in the database - then you click on Family Tree, Tree, and "Recents" and "add unconnected person"
then as you find out more - you can add parent, sibling, spouse, child.
you can also then add any historical document links to that person.
But the historical documents search was never designed to "add people to Family Tree"

adding an unconnected person
0 -
Right. Yeah that’s what I’m talking about. I’m not trying to just add random people here and there, it’s jsut. That when I find someone who I know will connect to my tree at some point, I would like for them to have an “identity” so I can start adding the other folks that go with them as I find them and vice versa
0 -
and thats the purpose of the "add unconnected person" function - which is kind of "hidden" in a place that many people dont find it.
