Do you know the name characters, especially the surname character? That will be important in beginning your research. You need the surname character and the specific location where the family lived. Sounds like you have that part.

Also, there is another community called "Chinese genealogy Research" (
https://community.familysearch.org/s/group/0F93A0000004hMbSAI/chinese-genealogy-research-) that they are all Chinese related. You may can get help from there too. Good Luck Rebekah!

Thank you for the replies. The surname is Lin Characters are 林. I think I might have the characters for his Grandpa Kai-cheng's name, but not grandma Pan Chin-Lan. I know that they lived in section 3, zhongshan east road, zhongli.

It looks like FamilySearch has some genealogy records for this area and for your surname. This is how you get to these records.
First log into FamilySearch.org then hover over "Search" then click "Records".
Next click on the map of China a drop down menu will appear, choose "China". This will take you to the page for China.
Once you are on this page go to the "Image-Only Historical Records" section.
You will see "China Collection of Genealogies 1239-2014". Click on this collection.
Next click on "Browse through 13,247,185 images".
You will see a list of family name characters, choose the correct Lin character for your family.
Choose "China" (country).
Choose "Taiwan" (province).
Choose "Taoyuan" (county).
This will take you to a list of Lin family genealogies for your surname and location. There are many books to choose from. Once you find your ancestor in one of these books, this genealogy will include multiple generations of ancestors for the family. These genealogies are written in traditional Chinese and you may need some help reading these records. Good luck finding your family!
Here is the link to the page with the genealogies for this area:

My friend that was suppose to translate never came though. Was wondering if there are any books that could help me read these records? Over the summer I read, "A Genealogist's Guide to Discovering Your Germanic Ancestors: How to Find and Record Your Unique Heritage". They give examples of German records and how to read them. Was hoping to find a book like that for Taiwanese ancestry.
Any helpful suggestions?

There are a few apps you can use to help with reading Chinese characters.
Pleco.com is a popular one.
archchinese.com is a Chinese English dictionary.
Others worth trying are;
mdbg.net
Yellow Bridge Dictionary
newocr.com
and let's not forget Google translate.
I am not sure about book sources. Since I read and write Chinese fluently, I haven't the need to use any special tool. But I have heard of a few books that might be helpful in doing Chinese genealogy, but I personally have not have the chance to read them.

Chinese Genealogy is often time complicated and difficult if you don't read Chinese. I would suggest Chinese Genealogy Workshop, you can get in touch with @HenryTom HenryTom for more information on that. Henry puts on these workshops twice a year and the classes and lectures are very helpful.

@Rebekah Kimminau where are you located? If you are in Salt Lake Utah area, you can bring it to the Family History Library, I would be happy to take a look to see if I can help.
