Hit a dead end searching for spouse ancestry.
Her dad's grandmother is shown as Maria Altagracia Santiago Lopez. (1871-1902) whose parents are shown to be Meliton Garced Munoz and Petronila Lopez. No DOB or DOD on either.
This family lived in and around Cayey. I hope someone can assist me in this search. Feliz Navidad! Bob Chandler

Bob,
I'd like more information about Maria Altagracia. If Meliton and Petronila are her parents, she doesn't have either one's last name, and that makes it confusing. Searches for Altagracia Santiago yield records for many people of that age in several towns. Would you tell me her spouse's name and children?
Thank you and Feliz Navidad!

So surprised (and delighted) to have you respond so quickly on this very important day!
I will prepare a proper response and send you more information soon, including the ID numbers I have.
Purportedly M Altagracia was born around 1871 but the marriage certificate to Meliton was in 1875.
I think she also went by Marquita Lopez, but did notice that most of the changes in the FS records on her were made by one Angel Menendez and I did not see any notes as to the reasons he made changes. Very confusing to me, but I hope you can steer this effort in the right direction. Can I attach a PDF of a fan chart when I respond to you through this group? If not, maybe I can email it to you directly?
FYI - My spouse (For 53 years now!) was born in Cayey. She is the former Maria del Carmen Zavala de Santos. We are doing this research for our four granddaughters. We live near them, all in Memphis TN. THX- BC

My error on the first query: Maria A. S. L (GMSC-75Q) was married to Meliton Garced Munoz (LY2T-9Z6). The record says she was born around 1871 to parents Ramon Santiago (G7BP-9GQ) and Petronila Lopez (G7BG-BG1). M.A.S.L. and Meliton had 5 children - Benita, Juan, Pedro, Juana and Marcolina (1885-1952 • LY2T-MZQ). Marcolina married Manuel Zavala Carballo ((LTHS-MQW) who was the grandfather of my Spouse, Maria del Carmen Zavala (GW9Y-P43). Maria came to Memphis in the mid 1960's to college. We met, married, have two sons. Both have two daughters. Thus our quest so they can understand their heritage. Please let me know any other info that may help you unravel the mystery. M.A.S.L also went by Marquita, I think. The dates of her birth marriage and childbirth events do not line up. Hope you can assist, Gracias Mil - BC

Bob, I was looking at the tree on FamilySearch, Meliton Garced: LY2T-9Z6
This is a very good tree. There is a record for Manuel Zavala Garced and his record mentions the name of both his paternal grandparents and maternal grandparents and where they lived, where they were from and if they still lived. That is why the
tree looks off to you. These are small towns in the mountain areas and many were part of a bigger town. Often you'd find records for them in several towns, it all depends where work took them and where the hospitals were.

I think we just crossed emails. Would it help if I sent you pdf's of the fan charts I am seeing? Mainly wanting to know
M.A.S. L's parentage and solve the mystery of birth in 1871, marriage in 1875, children borne very early and her death in 1902?

Bob, It seems like Altagracia's parents weren't married. When children are born out of wedlock people used to do funny things with their records (made up last names) since there was so much stigma attached to it.
I agree with you the dates don't match, I changed them. Hopefully FamilySearch will find hints with the new information.
I've been attempting to find all of them in the church records for Cidra and have not been successful. The records are not indexed and some are in poor condition.

Do you know if by chance some were slave? That's another thing to consider. I found a Petrona Lopez from St. Thomas living in that area (Ponce) and she had a daughter named Josefina Santiago Lopez.
This does seem to be a hard one to trace.

You are very kind to have looked into this for me. Just as in my family, Maria's parents/grandparents rarely talked with any specificity about their forebears, especially filtering anything unpleasant, unexplainable or untoward. So, we are left with minimal data from headstones, sanitized obits and incomplete information. But it has been fascinating for me to explore the "unknowns," going back hundreds of years in our two very different families. Again, thanks for you kind assistance. Should I learn anything interesting going forward, I will let you know. Feliz Año! BC
