If Michael Cavanaugh emigrated about 1870 I would think he came with some family members.
- Do you have names of any family like brothers or sisters?
- Do you have Michael in the 1900 and 1910 census records?
- Have you found an immigration record?
- Was Michael a Catholic or Protestant? This is important because a national marriage index starts in 1845 for the Protestants.

Here's what I know. A confirmed record of Michael Cavanaugh is in the 1900 census living at 1736 south 4th ave in Philadelphia, where I think he had been living with in-laws and wife Matilda Schmahll (Small) since they married in I believe 1891. A copy of a baptismal certificate says my grandfather William Cavanaugh was baptized September 23rd, 1892 at the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Philadelphia, which I believe is Catholic. Michael is also in the 1910 census at the same address, but died a couple weeks after the census was taken. Both census say he was naturalized, I think. I can't tell if it say "no" or "na" for naturalized. He was a dresser in a woolen mill. His death certificate lists his parent's names as Julia (no maiden name) and James. I found a Julia Cavanaugh on a passenger list for a ship called the "Batavia" arriving in New York, Castle Garden from Liverpool, on July 21, 1873. She is listed as "wife" though no husband is listed, but she has two children with her, Michael, age 8, and James, age 4. No idea if this is the right Julia Cavanaugh, but the dates roughly line up with dates given for his arrival in the 1900 census which says 1870, and 1910 census which says 1865. Both say Michael was born in Ireland, though his death certificate says he was born in Philadelphia. I also found a James Cavanaugh who may or may not be his brother, in both the 1900 and 1910 censuses, who is roughly the right age. He is living at 628 McCellan Street in Philly. Born in England, emigrated in 1872 or 1875, and says he was naturalized; same thing with either "no" or "na". I also found a death certificate for a James Cavanaugh Sr.; died Jan 2, 1944. Mother Julia O'Connor, born in England, father James Cavanaugh born in Ireland. I have not been able to definitively link James with Michael, but it seems as though they may be brothers. Michael and Matilda only had one child, my grandfather, but James had three; Mary, James and Julia with his wife Lizzie. So possibly there would be some relatives somewhere through them. If you can get anywhere with this I would be very grateful. The Cavanaughs have always been a mystery to me and I didn't get any info from my dad before he dies, unfortunately.
Thanks again! Patti Farris
