Aland, Abo, Foglo, Finland
This is my first post to this community group and also my first attempt at research in Finland and Sweden. I am hoping to find information on one JOHAN ALEXANDER JOHNSON (born 8 September 1866 in Abo, Finland) and his wife, IDA AUGUSTA SJOBERG (born 29 December 1866 in Aland). The Sjoberg family had connections to Foglo, Finland. From what little research I have done to this point, I know this family spoke and identified as Swedish. It is my understanding that Abo, Aland, and Foglo are today in Finland, but at one time were considered as part of Sweden. Is this true? If so, could someone direct me to a source where I could learn more about the history of the area where these places are? Also, if possible, could someone suggest where I might find vital records that would identify the parents of Johan Johnson and Ida Augusta Sjoberg named above? Thank you in advance for any consideration you extend this query.

Do you know when Johan Alexander and Ida Augusta were married and where?
I might have found them, but what other information you have on them?
Åbo (Turku), Åland and Föglö have always belonged to Finland. Föglö is in Åland. But Finland was a part of Sweden between about 1300-1809.
Åland is a Swedish speaking county and many people in Åbo are also Swedish speaking like my great grandfather.

Finland was a part of Sweden until 1809 and both were just one big county, then it was a duchy under Russia. Finland only became a county in 1917. The indigenous Finns spoke Finnish, but the Swedish colonizers spoke Swedish. The clergy all came from Sweden and so the records will be in Swedish regardless of what language the ancestors actually spoke. The Åland islands are in the Baltic sea between Sweden and Finland. Over 90% of the people their identify as Swedes making it even more Swedish than the mainland because modern Sweden has had a lot of immigrants in recent years.

Thank you for your prompt reply to my questions. I sincerely appreciate your input.
Johan Alexander Johnson and Ida Augusta Sjoberg immigrated to America in 1892 and settled in Merrill, Lincoln County, Wisconsin. I found this information in the records of the Swedish Lutheran Church in Merrill, Wisconsin. Also in those records it stated they were married on 27 December 1891. I assume that was in Finland, but there was no mention of the place of their marriage in the records I searched. It may have been in Aland as that was where Augusta came from. Ida was called Augusta when she came to America. The U. S. Census records state that the parents of both Johan and Augusta (Ida) were born in Sweden and spoke Swedish. Also, Augusta had a brother, August Leander Sjoberg, who was born 8 July 1863 in Foglo, Finland. He, his wife and their four children, immigrated to America on 27 December 1887. At this point, this is all I know about these families. I do not read Swedish or Finnish.
Thank you in advance for advice or suggestions you are able to provide with this additional information. Sincerely, Dan Haney
