His real name is Jön Månsson, but isn't listed that way on the surveys. Maybe the word is his occupation? If so, I can't find it in the Swedish Historical dictionary

The word is "Brassare" and is probably an occupation. The ending "...are" often indicates a person who performs some kind of work. The Swedish Historical Dictionary has "brass" as a "brace", so a brassare would be a maker of braces(?)
This is a good list of Swedish occupations available in the Family Search Wiki: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Sweden_Occupations .

Thank you. I appreciate knowing how to break down the word. He was listed as a båtsman on his marriage record. Braces as in suspenders? Metal? I guess I'll never know exactly :-)

Hello @KatieGen KatieGen ,
After looking at the 3 household examinations I checked online and found a lady in Sweden who posted a query on the Federation of Genealogical Societies forum (Rötters Anbytarforum) from 2011 looking for information on the Båtsman Jon Månsson Brassare. The Madesjö AI:3, p. 57 household record shows the abbreviation Bm to the left of his name. The later 2 household records list him as torpare. It looks like he was in the navy when he was younger and kept using the non-patronymic name Brassare even after he left the service. The Svenska Indelningsverket book by C. Grill shows Kålfly as one of the båtsmantorps in Madesjö. So, the non-patronymic last name Brassare was used because Jon Månnsson was a Båtsman (navy sailor) not as the title for an occupation. See the query at https://forum.rotter.se/index.php?topic=22750.msg364800#msg364800. Madesjö provided navy sailors for the Första Södra Möre Indelnings-Båtsmans Compani.
