Hello @evelynwallace2 evelynwallace2
Do you have a FamilySearch person ID so we can take a look?
Thank you,

Could you please give me the name and FamilySearch PID (ID number) of the person you are searching. I ran into this same issue with my tree from TN in the early 1800's. There were three brothers who named just about every child with the same names. It took a lot of searching to figure out who belonged to who. If I can see the record I may be able to provide some help.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

With much, TIME; and, PATIENCE ...
Many of us have been there ... you are not alone ...
Both, through "Censuses"; and/or, wayward "Merges"/"Combines" ...

What I have seen happening very often is that once a child dies, the next born is given the same name.
This may also happen more than once, so that you can have two, three or even four children named "Charles" in the same family, however only one is alive at any given time.
I know the challenge of identifying which one of the "Charles" then got married and had kids...
As Brett said, Time & Patience is the way!

Hello @evelynwallace2 evelynwallace2
In some countries the parents have to "buy" a name from the church. So if the first Peter dies young, the next male gets the same name.
Sourcing is the difficult task.

In Family Tree, children's names are sorted by birth or christening date when these are present. Any children without dates are put at the end of the list and sorted alphabetically. At this time, we have no control over this. So the only thing you can do if you know the actual order is to put in a calculated date which assumes children about every two years or roughly equally distributed between known dates like this:
John - 15 July 1820
John - about 1822
John - about 1824
John - 14 January 1826
John - about 1827
John - 18 February 1828
Do put notes in the Reason Statements as to any evidence you have about the order and why you assigned the years you did.

Please give me an example of some of the countries where they had to "buy" a name from the church. I am interested to know if this may have been the case in a country I am researching. Very interesting!
