I am helping a friend find her family in Italy. I have them in the 1880 census (attached). some of
Later the children spell their last name Amatal. Vincente is also Thomas Vincente in other records. And Mother Columbine in Klara. The ancestor is Mary Eveline Amatal KFJ9-N5C. The mother on Family search is wrong.

amatal is not an italian name. I looked at the census you provided and the spelling of the last name there is ARINELLI and the name does come for the Palermo province area of Sicily . See map Sound like you friend needs to find the name of the town her/his family was from by doing more USA research naturalization petitions, death certificate etc. BUT use the correct name.

Hi Sis. Dalebout,
I've had good luck finding specific towns of origins for Italian immigrants in their military registration records so check that for at least the town, but it does sound like you'll need more naturalization records as Toni indicated to verify the surname.
According to Indettaglio http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognomi/cognomi_sicilia.html there are some Arinelli families living in Caccamo, Palermo, Italy.
You can try civil records from 1820-https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/481396?availability=Family%20History%20Library.
If you do not have any luck then I suggest you go back to the U.S. to search the town of origin and verify the name.
Buona Fortuna!

If I could only read Italian.

Which other census records have you found the family in? I am more inclined to think the surname could be Annatelli also found in Palermo but in Bagheria.

Sister Dalebout,
There are limited indici decennali (10 year index) for the births before 1866. This is typically a perfect resource when you do not have an exact date. I checked the film #1964268 Items 1 - 5 which contains the indici decennali for births 1866 and after, but there is no Annatelli nor Arinelli.
The girls were likely born before 1866 since census dates seem to make them younger than they actually are, even children. So, I suggest you search image by image through the following films. Once you locate a record with one of the possible surnames then you can post it here and we can help you translate it: film #1964267 Items 1 - 4 for Nati (Birth) 1864-; film#1964266 Item 7 for 1862-63 Nati.
Hopefully, the girls were born during those years since the other films of earlier dates are locked until you can return to the Family History Library.
Also, on FamilySearch Wiki you'll find a great guide to understanding and translating Italian forms for births and baptisms: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Italian_Birth_Document_Translation. You'll see the child's surname in the right column (the baptisms info) about halfway down (see doc). His name is also on the left side (the civil birth info), but sometimes the surname is harder to find on the left.
Let us know when you need further help.

Thanks for your help. I can’t find another census. There were no sons born in Italy and I can’t find any immigration or naturalization records for dad. The birth records on the kids born in the US he is using Amatal as his last name.

You're welcome, but just remember that as Debbie suggested the family could also be in Bagheria so that's worth checking out, too, if nothing results in Caccamo. They are both in Palermo.
