Searching for first husband
I am trying to find the possible first wife of Johann Georg Karl Friedrich von Bandel (L1ZD-1Y9, 1747-1818). He was married at age 54, in 1802, to Johanne Rosine Barbara Schulteiss who was then 20. Georg was born in Stettin, Pomerania, and Rosine was born in Ansbach, Bavaria. They married in Ansbach. It seems very logical that this was Georg's second marriage, seeing he was over 30 years older than his wife. Where could I look and how could I know if he was married before?
Thanks.

Before looking for a previous marriage, you should first find a copy of the 1802 marriage since that should tell you if he was married previously or not.

Exactly! The 1802 marriage is found on Archion.de in Ansbach, St. Johannis parish Landeskirchliches Archiv der Evang.-Luth. Kirche > Dekanat Ansbach > Ansbach-St. Johannis > Trauungen; Proklamationen 1801-1812 image 146
That marriage does not say that the groom was a widower or indicate that he had been married previously. The couple was married privately, with government permission. Since they already had two children together, this is not surprising.

Okay, thanks. I know they actually had three sons before their marriage, and that Georg was a civil servant. Makes sense why they married privately. Thanks!

Yeah I also wanted to mention that as a public official this gentleman was well taken care of and had no need to marry. He may also have traveled frequently, which may have discouraged him from getting married earlier. Financial freedom allowed for a choice to marry or not, whatever worked best. For most people, marriage was a necessary social and financial tool, a safety net, so to speak.

Okay, that's interesting to know. Thanks! Then it makes sense why he married someone less than half his age! Thank you!
