Death data vs baptismal information - Schotmar

The death record for my 4th great grandfather, Johan Henrich Koch, shows that:

**Name, Status, and Family relations of the deceased:** Koch, Johann Heinrich, tenant and widower since 21 November 1829 (the surviving dependants did not know the date of the marriage)

**Date of death:** 26 [November 1849]

**Date of burial:** 29 [November 1849]

**Illness**[cause of death]: Debility of old age

**Age:** 86 years

**Born:** 17 December 1763 _l. Sch. v. Schötmar_ (not sure what this means; for Schötmar see https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/20757050

I checked the following for the birth of Johan Henrich Koch in Dec 1763:

Lage - none

Orlinghausen - none

Heiden - none

Salzuflen - none

Stapelage - none

Schotmar – This appears to be his birth/baptismal record. His death record gives his birth as 17 Dec 1763, not 8 Dec 1763. Could this be because this book is a duplicate and it was mis-copied? The death record does give his wife’s death date of 21 Nov 1829, correctly. Or is this simply a mistake by those reporting the birth date at the time of death? Or is there another explanation?

Hello Jenny,

I agree with your assumption that the birth/baptismal record and the death record are most likely for the same person. The different date of birth in the death record is probably a communication error, but we'll probably not be able to solve the puzzle any more.

On second thought, the abbreviation in the death record (l. Sch. v. Schötmar) COULD mean “laut Schreiben von Schötmar” (according to the letter from Schötmar).
