Merging living people
I thought they said at roots tech yesterday that you could merge living people's ID numbers using the merge Id function so everyone would now have only one number. Was this incorrect? Tried merging my daughter's PID number that she sees when logged in to the one I see when I'm logged in. Didn't work. Shows one as person unknown.

As I understand, two Living IDs WITHIN the GROUP may be merged. But that the Living PID your Private space (outside the group) cannot be merged with a Living PID within the group.

Related question regarding Memories.
My grandson has his own PID, his mother shows him in her private tree with a different PID, same for his father, and his grandparents. Potentially there are 4 or 5 PIDs for this grandson and many of those have unique Memories attached.
How do we get all those Memories into one PID within the family group tree?

I heard the same comment in the What's News at FamilySearch for Members: use the merge by ID number. It didn't work for me. My wife & I each have the other as living people in our private spaces. I invited my wife to a family tree group with our descendants. We couldn't use "merge by ID," so my wife added me using the FamilySearch ID number from my private space as an additional spouse. This showed her with two husbands, so we then merged the two copies of myself using merge by ID. The merge seemed to work. However, when my wife went back the the FamilySearch tree (leaving the group family tree), there was a new private ID for me (her husband). So even after the merge, there are still different ID numbers for me in our private spaces.
Question: can we eliminate duplicate copies of living people by using family tree groups?

Yes, you are supposed to be able to by using Merge By ID but either people are misunderstanding what this means or there is a glitch somewhere they need to fix.
- In your private space there should only be one of you and one of your wife. Merge any duplicates using Merge By ID.
- In your wife's private space there should only be one of you and one of your wife. Merge any duplicates using Merge By ID.
- In the group tree there should only be one of you and one of your wife. Merge any duplicates using Merge by ID.
This should leave just three different IDs each for you and your wife: one in your private space, one in your wife's private space, and one in the family group space. These cannot be merged because they are in different private spaces.
The goal with a shared group tree is to give you one profile for living relatives that you can work together on as a family. It only decreases duplicates for people who have a minimal number of living people in their own private space. They don't need to add any more living but can be in the group and work on all the living people there instead.
For example, if a grandmother has a private space with her husband, all her children and their spouses, all the grandchildren and spouses, and all the great-grandchildren, let's say 75 people, she can create a group by copying over all her private people and invite everyone. When a grandchild gets a FamilySearch account for the first time, he can also be invited to the group and never need to enter any living people, other than himself, in his own private space. Instead he can just help out working on people in the group.

I am afraid I don't understand what this tree does for me. when I invited my father, he has 23 memories in his tree, but I can only see 18 or 19 on his page when I view the shared tree. I have 5 memories that I can see on my page, but he can only see 2 of them. Any thoughts?

This is a concern for me, too.
The problem is, I started the group for my wife and I by "importing" the people in my group.
Because my wife is smarter (and better looking) than me, her private tree has more complete information. So we now have individuals in her (more complete) private tree, individuals (lacking a few) in my private tree, and individuals (lacking a few) in the group tree which I own.
You're telling us that the ONLY way to add the missing individuals to the group tree is to enter their information BY HAND. Retyping information is error prone and painfully time consuming.
This would only be worse if my 55ish old siblings and I want to have a shared tree. Virtually none of the people are duplicated. If we start with whichever sibling as the base all the children and grandchildren of the OTHER siblings must be reentered BY HAND. One sibling has already balked at this and said it is a non-starter.
I understand we may not be able to merge a private individual with a group tree individual. But PLEASE provide a way to IMPORT from any participating group member's private tree individuals to the group tree. We can merge in the group tree.
Please.

@Brian Cragun you may want to review all the links on the lab page for family groups: https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/family-group-tree-pilot/family-group-trees-pilot-help-and-learning
One of them goes to this help center article: https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/family-group-tree-pilot/article/how-do-i-add-people-to-a-family-group-tree where it states: "Group participants can add people to a family group tree by either typing the information in or copying from their private list." And lower down it gives the procedure. New people do need to be added one at a time.
If the instructions don't work, that needs to get fixed and you need to describe precisely the steps members of your group are taking and where this fails so the developers can get it fixed.
Since you created the group, try this precise series of steps. Have your wife sign into FamilySearch. She then needs to go to the group tree. There find the Add Spouse link connected to you. When she clicks there, her list of private people in her private space should appear. She needs to copy her own profile from her private space into the group with all the information she has there. This will give two of her as your spouses. Then merge those two profiles.

I had a chance to test this out more thoroughly today.
Your wife can add more than one person at a time from her private space. She needs to go to the group information page:
and click Copy From My Tree. This will bring up a list of everyone in her private space and she can choose who to copy into the family group. These will not necessarily link into the existing pedigree and you may only be able to find them by going to the Person List tab. There you will see every profile in the group and be able to see which IDs need to be merged.
On the Person List tab is also a Copy From FamilySearch Tree button. When you are signed in, this brings up a list from your private space and allows you to copy additional people into the tree. When your wife is signed in, this brings up a list from her private space but only allows her to copy herself at this point.

There have been several updates to the Family Group Trees and the instructions. Please review these changes and if you are still having difficulties, please start a new post in this group.
