Hi Virginia,
what exactly are you looking for about your father-- birth, marriage, death, emigration, military? What exactly?
If you tell us what you are looking for, we can better help you.
Look forward to hearing from you.

I’m looking for his parents and his brothers and sisters. Also he was in the Dutch Merchant Navy so any records from that as well.
thank you

In the Netherlands, birth records are public after 100 years. Your father's birth certificate will not be public until 1 January 2022.
But you might be able to get a copy before that date if you can prove your relationship to your father (i.e your birth certificate) and his death. You will need to contact the municipality (gemeente) in Nijmegen (https://www.nijmegen.nl/) Are you sure it was in the city Nijmegen itself and not a nearby village?
Dutch birth records of this era contain the date and time of birth, the occupation and sometimes ages of the parents, names and occupations of two male witnesses, and often an address.
Marriages are public until 75 years ago (1944) and deaths 50 years (1969). There is also the population register (bevolkingsregister), which used to available up to 1939 but many of the records from less than 100 years ago are now no longer available for privacy reasons.
If you knew your grandparents, then you should be able to find their marriage, births and possibly deaths. Dutch genealogy after 1811 is fairly straightforward, but the hardest part can be getting past the 100 year limits on many types of records.
I wish you good luck on your journey, and please ask any questions you have. I will be happy to help.

Thank you. Yes I’m pretty sure it actually was Nijmegen. I will follow up with your suggestion about contacting the municipality. I know some of his sisters and bothers names but not birthdates.
thank you

I've had another look at Nijmegen resources.
The births are only available online to 1912. You have to visit the archive in person for 1913-1919.
https://www.openarch.nl/ is probably the best site for post-1811 births, deaths and marriages in the Netherlands.
This resource from the Regional Archive in Nijmegen may help you: https://www.huisvandenijmeegsegeschiedenis.nl/info/Woningkaarten
It seems from the above that the post-1920 population registers (or woningkaarten) in Nijmegen are available, but you can't search by name to provide some privacy protections to the people mentioned in them. It might be tedious work to find your father's family, but given that gemeente Nijmegen probably couldn't help you until after the pandemic it might be the quickest.
I'm sorry that I can't help you more today- I know this may sound quite daunting if you're a newcomer to Dutch genealogy. I'm sure other forum users will help and I can help tomorrow if you'd like.

Were your aunts and uncles older or younger than your father? Also, when and where did your father pass away?

His fathers name was Albertus Leonardus I believe. His brothers Antoon and Herman were younger. I think his sisters were older and he had an older Brother as well. There were either 7 or 9 children. One sister died during world war ll. My father passed away in 2006 in Vancouver BC. He was the only one of his family that immigrated to Canada.

Here's a marriage for an Albertus Leonardus van der Sande in 1910: https://www.openarch.nl/gld:FC38C520-2AA2-4CBE-AE5A-2FE5C91E30A3

And this would be your aunt's death in 1944: https://www.openarch.nl/gld:80CD9242-B10C-4D26-95CF-4903E22521B1
It appears she was victim of the US Bombing in Nijmegen when the city was still under nazi control.

I looked in Openarch.nl for the surname in Nijmegen. Of course, it is there, but not your father. Since I knew no other names, I had nothing to go on for anyone else. Plug those names into the search box and see if the older ones or his dad appear. You should also look for the marriage of his parents.
How about the entries on this page. could any of them be your grampa?
You will have to look at each entry to see if some are the same person and you might be able to piece something together.

It is a great phrase. These sorts of phrases have to be learned one by one, but they add a lot of flavor to one's speech. I am always on the lookout for books with such phrases in other languages, esp German (which I have), and Dutch (I have nothing).

I see your point, I like it when these expressions are in a irl context, because that will show their true nature and explanatory
power, i also like allegory's and 'beeldspraak' altough i like to avoid that magical thinking becomes a form of realism.
There are links on the web, like this, as many as you like.

I will be on the lookout for a book in Dutch, maybe my daughter knows of something.Had a bit of a bad day , yesterday, i pushed a scewdriver thru my finger in a nasty way.

Zeeuws Vlaams, the language of my mother.1,5 mile from here another world. We do understand each other and can communicate , but almost all pronouncement is different, so are the expressions.

Adrie,
this is a great link and will be very useful. If your daughter can provide the titles on any such books, that would be most welcome, too.
Thanks!

Fritz, after some looking around and seeing prices of up to 40 euro for some books
that only provide a good layout and further only classical dutch material, or
ABN-Flemish distorted dialect; I tried to find good flemisch material in the form of pdf's on the web, that i can check in advance.
This is a very good one, even talks briefly of 'Hebban Olla vogele',
also , very good presented and explained.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebban_olla_vogala (only as example)!
