Would these be 'Aufhirte' and 'Shirmer' as occupations from a 1754 Alsace birth record

Not sure if the first is 'Aüfhirte' or 'Rüfhirte' or something similar -- couldn't find it in dictionary, but maybe a type of shepherd?

The second looks pretty clearly to be 'Schirmer' which translates as 'substitute fighter for duels' or 'protector', but here I'm thinking might be more related to 'schirrmacher' as wagon maker? Any suggestions? Thanks! Tom

Hello Tom,

First image: Kühhirte = cowherd

I agree with you that the word is "Schirmer" in the second image. Checking Wörterbuchnetz the various definitions define the word as some type of protector or sponsor.

Schirrmacher = wagon maker

Schirmmacher = umbrella maker

Thanks @Robert Seal_1 ! Interesting - kühhirte didn't come up in Wordmine as a possibility when I was searching for candidates, but I see it now in the dictionary. For schirmer, I have seen equivalents in later years for rural and forest rangers, so maybe this was a precursor to something like that.
