Sauter Family Baden-Württemberg
Quick question.
When locating records in Baden-Württemberg, especially in the FamilySearch wiki, I've noticed that most of the options are either for Baden or Württemberg. How do I know which one I should be looking in?
My location is Ratshausen, Zollernalbkreis, Baden-Württemberg, Germany as far back as the 1600's... if not earlier??
Thanks in advance

Familysearch probably has the records under Württemberg
but Ratshausen was actually under Austrian rule for 400 years before Napoleon in 1806.
This page has some history about Ratshausen.

I find Wikipedia to be very useful - even the English language version of Wikipedia is quite good on German history and geography, and the German version (de.wikipedia.org) goes very into depth. German Wikipedia can be translated using the Chrome or Edge browsers and typically translates quite well. The first would be to look up the history of your area of interest on both Wikipedias. In your case, German Wikipedia goes quite into depth and gives a good overview of what German states they belonged to historically: Ratshausen - Wikipedia.
Another thing that's useful is to have a look at some articles on the older political subdivisions of Germany. The modern German Lander often have their roots in either Lander of the German Empire or in Provinces of the State of Prussia. These boundaries sometimes changed prior to 1871, but these States and Provinces correspond well to Germany's traditional regions and will provide a good starting point.

Hope this helps,
