Middle Name and Occupation?
Hello - I give up. I cannot figure out the middle name of Lambert Steinke of Voltlage, Osnabrück, Niedersachsen who was born 1776 and died 1836. In some records it seems to be abbreviated as something like Jtal, but in his birth and death records, attached, it seems to be spelled out. I assume it's the Latinized version of his name but can't find anything in the dictionaries I have. One of his baptismal sponsors has the same first name, abbreviated in his baptismal record. One on-line tree shows his middle name as Helmut -- could that be correct?
I am also struggling with his occupation. Here is what I have transcribed from his death record: Steinke Lambert, Itelius? Eingewohners/Eigen??? sons ??? ? Höckel Ehemann von Maria Adelheid Meyer Starb um Auszehrung 61 Jahre und 8 Tage alt
I appreciate any help

Hello Liz,
I read the middle name as: Itelius. I found 26 examples of "Itelius" on Ancestry as a first or middle name when I restricted the search to Germany.
His occupation is: "Eigenwohner und Schmiedemeister in Höckel". I am interpreting "Eigenwohner" as the more common "Einwohner" = inhabitant or resident. So the phrase would translate as: inhabitant and master smith in Höckel.
Here is a transcription of the entire death record:
Steinke, Lambert Itelius, Eigenwohner und Schmiedemeister in Höckel, Ehemann von Maria Adelheid Meÿer, starb an Auszehrung, 61 Jahre und 8 Tage alt.

I appreciate your help Robert. Interesting that I didn't see Itelius on any Latin name lists! I did find a bishop in the Hohenzollern family who became bishop of Osnabrück in 1623, died in 1625 and is buried at the cathedral in Osnabrück so maybe that is how the name entered this area .. (Itelius Fridericus a Zollern; his first name as Itelio; and his last name as Zolleren; and as Zollern-Sigmaringen.)
Kind Regards
Liz

You're welcome, Liz. Given that Itelius appears to be a very rare name, it doesn't surprise me that it didn't appear on any Latin name lists.
