One Latin word in Baptism record
Hello - I would appreciate help with one word in the Baptism record for Andreas Desch, 17 Mar 1800, in Burgjoss, Hesse, Germany. What is the word before the father's name..... I think it is his profession....
My transcription..... Andreas f.l. Susanna Haberkorn et pastor?pacator? Jacobi incola......
Many thanks

Hello Liz,
I read the word as "prætor" = mayor, magistrate, but it looks as if the word has been struck-out.

Hi Robert - hmmm .. I see what you mean. Interesting situation. This wasn't included in his other childrens' baptism records. I haven't found his burial record yet, so maybe that will shed some light ....
Thank you for reviewing.

You're welcome, Liz. Also note in the same record the baptismal sponsor is identified as a "praetore" -- presumably a form of the same word, so perhaps the scribe wrote the word in the wrong place, then crossed it out, and wrote it in the correct place.

Good point! Thank you for your careful evaluation of this record.
