What does atis mean in relation to surnames on an English christening record?
I was researching a family line and came across a baptism record which listed the father's name as John Tremlett atis Newton. I have not seen this phrase before and am wondering what it means. On the image, it is the third christening in February, Mary daughter of John. Any help is appreciated!

I believe it is meant to be "alias". The second letter is an "l". I forget the correct term for the cross-bar that goes above the letters, but have found something similar in old parish registers. This has given the impression of a surname including two Ls, e.g. Collins, having two Ts - i.e., looking like Cottins my example.
If you have doubts (above the second letter) look at instances of the small letter "t" in other words / names.

Thank you so much! That makes way more sense.
