It's a name, and can be searched like any other name. The system tends to get confused with words like "oder", and give you all kinds of crazy hits. I usually search for one of the names within the name. That usually returns anything that includes the name searched.
If you are looking for records from the Germany births, deaths, & marriages, before about 1900, there is a problem. For some reason, the index became unsearchable about a year ago. No search will return any hits. You can only search the tree for people already in the tree. If you find a person, and if any records are attached, you can see the index entries attached to the person. There appears to be no way to see anything in the index that is not assigned to a person. Luckily a person seems to have been created for most records, and you will find a duplicate person that you can merge with the one you created.
Also, you may need to experiment with how you specify the place name. One day, about a month ago, searching for "Versmold" suddenly quit working. After much effort, I found that "Versmold, Westphalia" would work. It's best if you have a record, any record, from the place you are interested in. That way you know it exists, and there is some magic combination that should find it.
