@Robert Seal_1 -- Robert, I thank you once again for your assistance. Your translation seems perfect but the word "spice merchant" is a bit of a surprise. In German, I think you are seeing "Specerei händler" or something close to that. Is that correct? This son is no longer in the "blade" business, whch is an interesting change. Thanks!

You're welcome, Gary. Yes, I am reading the informant's occupation as: Specereihändler. I am more familiar with the spelling "Spezereihändler"; in either case: spice merchant or spice trader.

@Robert Seal_1 - Six months have passed and I am revisiting this death record that I copied when I visited the Stadtarchiv Solingen during Oct 2022. I am still looking for another source to confirm that that Carl Knecht, son of the deceased Carl Wilhelm Knecht, was a spice merchant or spice trader.
Could you possibly transcribe (in German) the phrase or sentence that provides this information? That mighht prove helpful as I continue my research elsewhere.

A few years earlier, the same Carl Knecht (age 44) reported the death of his mother. Can you please verify that he is not described as a "spice merchant" in this document?

Hello @Gary Knecht,
In this 1873 death record for Anna Catharina (Müller) Knecht, Carl Knecht is identified as the son of the decedent, 44 years of age, living in Kohlsberg, and his occupation is: Schleifer = polisher/grinder.

So in the course of 6 years (1873 to 1879) he switched from polisher/grinder to spice merchant? Seems unlikely, but I will keep looking for evidence. Annd many thannks for confirming this @Robert Seal_1

You're welcome, Gary. FYI: If everything else seems to match, don't get too hung up on the two different occupations.

"Specereihändler" is probably much less fancy than spice merchant sounds in English. It could have been something like a grocer or even a jack of all trades, see https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezerei
