Using the Griffiths Valuation (1847 - 1864) AND the Revaluation books. NORTHERN IRELAND ONLY.
Griffith’s is useful as a census “substitute”. It has its limitations and only lists the main/head “occupier” with little to no indication of any other family members. But it can be useful in finding people and the area where they lived. The maps can be used (Askaboutireland/Griffiths.ie) to see what existed when the Valuation was taken, and by toggling the maps between Historical and modern/satellite any buildings that existed at the time of the valuation and are still standing can be found.
PRONI recently placed the “Revaluation” Books online. (No charge for access/downloads) https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/services/searching-valuation-revision-books. Every ten years following the original Valuation, a new book would be opened and the old book was “closed”. Using these revaluation books a researcher can track who occupied a particular holding and the year that there were any changes. These were endorsed on the appropriate Revaluation Book with a different coloured ink for each year. The original Griffith’s reference was used throughout.
On the image above we can see that John KERRIGANs first names is scored through and Samuel is written in. On the right side of the image the year is entered (1864). Hence there was a change in 1864 that we can search for (possible death etc)
