TOPIC TAGS - a great new feature
not only for use in the Community - but even more importantly in FamilySearch Memories.
see this step by step guide on it's use in FamilySearch Memories
http://yanceyfamilygenealogy.org/TopicTags.pdf
Be aware that Topic Tags are NOT the same thing as Tags that are used to link Memories items to the corresponding people in FamilyTree.
This is a great new feature I encourage all to use.
Be aware though that the majority of the millions of uploaded Memories items are not tagged and wont show up on tag searches. You might consider going back and tagging all your previously uploaded items.

I just added the following two submission to FamilySearch Family Tree Feedback suggestions:
Topic Tags are great - but how to best facilitate retro creation of already submitted items.
1) TOPIC TAG-ing - multiple items at once.
TOPIC TAGS - allow adding to more than one item at a time.
Topic Tags on Memories Items are great.
but with so many items already loaded - please help us by facilitating the creation of such tags. Could you please allow selecting of multiple memories items - and then allow tagging of all of them in one set of steps - so that for example all the items in a Family Bible folder - could be selected and tagged with "Family Bible" - instead of having to go one by one??
2) RETRO creation of TOPIC TAGS for Memories Items
Automation of topic tagging?
The new Topic Tags for FamilySearch Memories are a great way to make it easier to group and find similar items. KUDOS to that project!!
However - with MILLIONS (Billions?) of Memories items already uploaded - some automated or semi-automated help from FamilySearch to get these already uploaded items tagged would be greatly appreciated. I wonder if a batch process could be created to automatically create tags for old memories items - possibly creating the following tags: a surname tag for every person/surname the item is attached to, a key word tag - based on the key words in the description or file name.

@Dennis J Yancey - Great ideas - I am glad you suggested them.

@Dennis J Yancey thank you for your ideas here. Please note that we purposefully did not seed the topics within the FamilySearch Community with a large number of entries, because we want to allow users to create topics that they deem useful. As far as topic folders, that is something I can suggest to the vender, but will be something rather low on their priority list.

understood
but some topic tags are "no brainers" - hey there's millions of memories items out there with no topic tags - give us some help in indexing them.
No brainers - would be like a surname topic tag - generated by the surname of the person it is attached to. How can some tags vs no tags - be a bad thing.
if there are more tags than needed I dont see how that can hurt. The whole point of tags is to be able to find things eaisly and find things that we didnt realize were even there.
I did not mean to imply that FS would be creating folders - - merely that FS should make it easy for us - in not forcing us to apply tags one by one - but rather allow us to select a group of items and apply the tag to all the selected entries.
this request- is just to give us users some releif - in trying to tag - millions of records that are out there.
yes - in addition to the "no brainers" - yes let the users figure out what they want. . . .

so what shall be done with the millions of Memories records out there that don't have topic tags? (and thus are not easily searched on)
Has anyone considered the possibility of an indexing project to create topic tags on Memories items?
on a slightly different subject
@Roger Allen Bell also brought up point that a possible topic tag cold be [unidentified]
and that people could search on such a tag and work on identifying the person.
Another similar topic tag- which I think is even better - would be something like [yet to be tagged ] - tagged in this previous bracket set meaning "note yet linked" to the corresponding person.
(The multiple meanings of "tag" causing some confusion)
On the Family Bible Preservation project - we have thousands of items already in Memories but that need to be linked/tagged to the corresponding person family. and people looking at topic tags of
[ yet to be tagged ] could help facilitate the project.
Though I wonder if an item is not linked to a person - that if it is topic tagged - will it actually come up when a person clicks on the same topic tag.
(I believe that the FIND option doesn't work for items not yet tagged to a person)
