Crewe, Cheshire, England
Please see my two requests dated December 12, 2019 for
Crewe by Farndon, Cheshire, England
and
Crewe Green, Cheshire, England
As stated previously, there are three places in Cheshire with a similar name:
1. Crewe by Farndon, in the west of the county;
2. The railway town of Crewe in the south-east - which exists only after the coming of the railways in 1837;
3. The township / civil parish of Crewe aka Crewe Green, immediately adjacent to the railway town, which existed for centuries before the coming of the railways and was in a different parish.
Some tweaking of their entries would help. This is the third request and concerns the railway town of Crewe. The railway town of Crewe was named after the railway station of Crewe, which was named after Crewe Hall, which is in Crewe aka Crewe Green township.
The place currently has these entries:
1085-1801 - Crewe, Cheshire, England (town)
1801-1866 - Crewe, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom (town)
1866-1877 - Crewe, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom (town)
1877-today - Borough of Crewe, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom (borough)
Issue 1a - the 1085-1801 entry refers to the railway town of Crewe, which did not exist until after the coming of the railways. Let's say 1837 for that, as per Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crewe.
Therefore the entry 1085-1801 needs to be deleted entirely. The area that the railway town was built on was referred to as Monks Coppenhall, never as Crewe before the railways. Monks Coppenhall already exists in your places. (Monks Coppenhall is also down as an Alternate Name for Crewe - this seems fine to me because Monks Coppenhall carried on as a jurisdiction for various things for ages.)
Issue 1b - I notice that you have a reference in the (railway town of) Crewe entry to the name being in the Domesday Book. That reference is incorrect in the sense that it should be on the place "Crewe Green, Cheshire, England" so it needs to be moved there.
Issue 2 - the name "Borough of Crewe" is inconsistent in that FS virtually never adds "Borough of" to place-names. Nearby Macclesfield, e.g., is sensibly just "Macclesfield" in the place-names, even though it was a borough. Further, I believe it has resulted in incorrect standardisation of historical record indexes because from 1877 onwards, "Crewe" appears to match "Crewe by Farndon" better than it does "Borough of Crewe". Whether this is automatic or manually chosen by indexers, I don't know but some index records are labelled "Crewe by Farndon" when they refer to the railway town of Crewe, miles away.
Therefore, the place-name entry "Borough of Crewe, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom" needs to be altered to "Crewe, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom"
Issue 3 - the entry dated 1801-1866 for "Crewe, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom" needs to be re-dated to 1837-1866 to match the coming of the railways as referred to above.
Point 4 - that being so - do we really need 3 different entries? I suggest FS consolidate them all into one, viz:
1837-today - Crewe, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom (town)
(Though I have no idea how easy consolidation is!)

Has anyone been able to look at these 3 requests to sort out the different Crewes in Cheshire, please?

Consolidation is not easy. Did the best I could do. Sure hope I got it right. 😁
