Margaretha Magdalena Beck death 26 Apr 1790 Karlsruhe, Baden, Deutschland film 102121327 page 804
Translation request: I believe the parents are Graben Pfarrer from 1737-1757, Francs Christoph Henrich Beck (from Durlach) and his wife Margaretha Barbara Geibel. (from Graben.)
I'd love to know the name of the Pastor. if possible. Words like this look impossible to me and yet sometimes the impossible is possible.

As you might know, Carlsruhe was the residental city of the Margrave (and later Grand Duke) of Baden with the palace at its center. The Oberhofprediger was the clergyman assigned to the court. At the time of Margaretha Magdalenas funeral this position was hold by Johann Leonhard Walz, the father of the T.H. Walz who signed her death record. Johann Leonhard Walz was an important person, his tomb can still be found in Karlsruhe. About him the text on the website says:
For whom this prominent burial place was created is revealed by the still decipherable inscription on the side facing the castle: "Johann Leonhard Walz / Born Sept. 20, 1749 / Died Dec. 8, 1817 / Employed here as a preacher, 32 years." Walz was not just any pastor, however, but the longtime Karlsruhe Oberhofprediger, who had taken over this office from his father in 1792. He was born in Lörrach while his father was still the town pastor there. Walz not only enjoyed the trust of the margrave and later grand duke, but also high recognition among the population. This surely stemmed from the fact that Walz, as a brief biography states, "during a long series of years gave words of blessing, edification, and consolation to all festivals of joy and all days of mourning in the grand ducal household and in the residence city." His speeches, delivered with a "powerful organ," "sought to have a moving and shattering effect on feeling."
It is not clear to me if he also officiated the burial of Margaretha Magdalena, or what the function of his son T.H. Walz was - was he also a pastor or just the scribe? (In 1790 Johann Leonhard Walz was 41 years old, so his son was probably not yet 20.)

If the pastor is the name at the bottom my guess is T. H. Walz. I have ancestors near here and some are Walz.

Ulrich: I am curious about the phrase "T.H. Walz, in the name of my father the senior court preacher"
The person two above has the same phrase but two other people on this page have the signature of a different Pastor who appears to be on a lower level. Having been to Carlsruhe I know it is a large city and probably was in 1790. So it appears there is a heirarchy of Pastors. in Carlsruhe. Does T.H. Walz have a father who is a "senior court preacher? Is T.H Walz acting in his father's behalf?
Very curious indeed!

Ulrich: My gggrandfather, Philipp Scholl, immigrated from Graben about 1848. I found his naturalization papers which says he "renounces allegiance to the Prince of Baden" and swears allegiance to the United States of America. Because of this, we visited Carlsruhe in 2019 and went to the palace so we could research the Prince of Baden that my gggrandfather had renounced allegiance to. Here is one of the naturalization documents:
