Geschlechterbuch
This summer, after a long period of not finding any information/records about my Schoof-Homberger ancestors on common used genealogy sites, I decided to use Archion. Low and behold, I found a treasure-trove of records and was able to being filling the holes in my family tree. As soon as I added the information into my family tree on Ancestry, the program began sending me loads of "hints". Most referred me to another Ancestry user that had the same individuals in their family tree. I finally decided to reach out to this person. Since he did not have specific sources attached to the individuals, I asked how he had obtained the information he had. He told me his source was Deutschen Geschlechterbuch> der Familie Mertelsmann,
My first thought was that this was a private family book collection, however, he told me I might be able to pickup a copy at a second hand shop. The thing is, I really don't understand what a Geschlechterbuch is; I googled the book and there were numerous entries. I was wondering if anyone could comment on the utility of a Geschlechterbuch and if the investment is worth it. Additionally, where might someone purchase such a book.
Many thanks for your help!

Hello @KathyBugianesi
"Deutsches Geschlechterbuch" is a many-volume genealogical handbook of German bourgeois families, published betwen 1889 and 2007. An overview can be found here: https://wiki-de.genealogy.net/Deutsches_Geschlechterbuch
All volumes are available on CD-ROM, the older ones also online free-of-charge on the website given above. There you can have a look what type of information is included.
You need to know which volume is of interest to you;. I found the family name "Mertelsmann" listed for "CD-ROM 28 Deutsches Geschlechterbuch Band 186-191", this volume is not available online, unfortunately. The CD-ROMs can be bought here: https://www.geschichtlicher-buechertisch.de/Starke-Verlag/Deutsches-Geschlechterbuch-auf-CD-und-DVD/
