In the year of Christ 1817 on 27 February at 2 o'clock were blessed in marriage in this community the young citizen and farmer Georg Kahl, legitimate unmarried son of the late Georg Kahl, former "Heimbürger" and "Waysenrichter" here and of the late Sibylla Engler, born 10 January 1794, with Anna Maria Schillinger, legitimate unmarried daughter of Georg Schillinger from Maleck and of the late Susanne Gutjahr, born 10 June 1796. Witnesses: 1) Matthias Rutsch, citizen and farmer here, age 35 years. 2) Georg Krayer, son of the "Heimbürger" Martin Krayer, age 22 years.
Ferdinand Zandt, Pastor
Heimbürger: Holder of a municipal office with (perhaps locally) quite different (administrative) tasks: 'village head, mayor, village judge'; also: 'administrator of the municipal assets; deputy or assistant to the village head; court assistant'; the exact function cannot always be clearly reconstructed from the documents.
Waysenrichter or Waisenrichter: Literally "orphan judge". In Baden, an orphan judge was the guardian and representative of the interests of minor children in the event of a dispute over an inheritance, even if only one parent had died.

Hi Ulrich:
Thank you!
I love the detail in the church records. I'm going to have to research Georg Krayer and see how we are related. He keeps showing up as a witness.
I appreciate the way you decipher the different occupations. I have come across Waisenrichter before, but it is good to be reminded.
It is refreshing to see occupations other than weingartner. The Reinhards in my tree were all weingartners or bauers. The occupation can be the deciding factor in whether or not it is your family. Especially with several generations of Georgs or Konrads.
Thanks again!
