Help with translation of 1790 baptism record for Adelheid Schriefer
I believe the Ancestry transcription of this record is somewhat mangled, so if you can read this handwriting, I would appreciate your help with a translation.
I think Ancestry may have the parents' surnames wrong (Schriefer, not Schaben, and Korss not Borg).
I think this record is for Adelheid Schriefer; however, I cannot pick out the name of the child.
How do you read the birthdate? Ancestry has it as 20 Nov 1787, and I do not see where they got this. Did someone pick up the 3 in the entry and think she was age 3 when baptised? I think it should be 20 Dec 1790 (same month and year as the baptism). Also, do you read the baptism day as 21 or 24 Dec?
This record is from: Bremen, Germany and Hannover, Prussia, Germany, Lutheran Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1574-1945; Bremervörde>Örel>Taufen, Trauungen, Tote u Konfirmanden 1715-1852, pg 256 (Ancestry image 268). It is the next to last entry on the right side. Here is the link: https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/61007/images/1189521-00417?pId=814001
Any help you can provide will be most appreciated

Hello @Brenda P Hayward
my comments to your questions:
> I think Ancestry may have the parents' surnames wrong (Schriefer, not Schaben, and Korss not Borg). <
I agree; I read the parent's names as Claus Schrifer and Hebbel Korß
> I think this record is for Adelheid Schriefer; however, I cannot pick out the name of the child. <
The first name of the child is Ahlheit. This is also the name of the first sponsor.
> I think it should be 20 Dec 1790 (same month and year as the baptism). Also, do you read the baptism day as 21 or 24 Dec? <
The day of the baptism is 24 Dec (year not given). The birth was "noctu zum 20ten" = in the night to the 20th

Thank you so much for your help and clarification on this record! It's very much appreciated.

The baptism took place on 24 Dec 1790 (the year is listed on the title page of this section of the book on image 265). It is definitely possible that someone saw the "3" in the record (which is indicating the third witness, although the others are not numbered) and thought it meant that Ahlheit was 3 when she was baptized.
I agree with Ulrich's reading of the father's surname Schrifer (a spelling variant of this name would be Schriefer, so you may see it spelled with that additional "e" in other records), but I'm reading the mother's surname as Koeß--it's easier to read in their 18 Nov 1779 marriage record, where it's written as Koes. (Compare the "e" to the "e" in "Hebbel" and compare it with the "r" in "Schrifer.")

Thanks so much for your reply as well. I will look more closely at the "e" vs "r" in this and their other records. In the GEDBAS it is spelled Korss but it does seem that the "e" makes more sense.
As to Schrifer/Schriefer, I have seen it spelled both ways in different records, as you suggest. I guess there is no "correct" spelling because as I understand it, spelling was not standardized back then. I usually go with the spelling that seems most logical and appears more frequently in the records, but I don't know if there is a genealogical "rule of thumb" that I should be following. In referring to a specific record I use the spelling in that record (with a correction in brackets if needed for clarification), but when referring to the person or family in general, it seems there needs to be one version for consistency and to avoid confusion.
Thanks again for your help on this.

I did not have the marriage record for Claus and Hebbel, so thank you for that as well. If I might impose on you some more, in the 18 Nov 1779 marriage record how do you read the given names of the fathers of the couple? Ancestry has them as Joan Schrifer and Winand Roes [Koes]. Can these be correct?
