Help with translation of entry in family book from Altenroda, Sachsen #6
Please read the translation of entry 1048 below and tell me if there is something that you would interpret differently. I included a page of the meaning of the symbols that you can refer to (I don't need translation of that page).
Thank you for your help! @Debra Palmer01

Hi
I had a read through but it seems pretty straightforward and looks OK.
Is there something that you are doubtful about?
If I were to question anything it would be to provide some more detailed explanations on the occupations, for example the terms "Anspänner" and "Hintersättler" do not directly translate to "full farmer" and "farm tenant", and although in practice that may have been true.
I would send you a link with some definitions, but the only ones I could find were in German also :-)

Hi again Debra Palmer01 , maybe you are only interested in the names and dates, but I have found it is useful to look a bit deeper to understand what was going on and guide future research.
I agree that Familysearch's general definition is the most satisfactory translation for Anspänner. We can say for sure that the person was tending to a largish-sized farm and therefore was using horses etc. to do so. We cannot say for sure whether he was the owner, or how big the farm would have been since a "full farm" was not a standard size between regions. One definition I found of Anspänner actually says "Besitzer eines kleinen Bauernguts" (possessing a _small_ farm!)
Regarding Hintersättler, it probably means they were farming a subdivided part of an estate, not usually big enough to support a family. They may, or may not have been tenants. Often this resulted as a larger family farm was broken up among children. Hence you will often find the people who ran these smaller lots were also carrying out other occupations simultaneously, because they couldn't subsist otherwise.

Although I asked a general question about my interpretation of the entry, I was questioning a little the definitions that I found for Anspänner and Hintersättler. Thank you for your detailed explanations about those occupations. I think that your suggestion to look deeper into the definitions of types of farmers in Germany could lead to additional information about the circumstances or place a person is living and guide my research. Such as, if I'm researching a farmer who worked on an estate, I could look for the name of the estate. Thank you for those tips on researching! Debra
