What happened to the details on "View Record"?

I've been working on a lot of German records, and they've been wonderful since they often include a woman's maiden name. I noticed an update in the last few days—each person listed in the record used to be right there when you were attaching a source and you clicked on "View Record". Very easy to see. (Sorry I don't have a screenshot, but I wasn't expecting a change like this.) Now, you just have the information for the main person, and you have to go through multiple dropdown menus to find it, if it's there. In the example, I was looking for the maiden name of Karl Lusch's mother. She's listed as Pauline Lusch. Again, the old format would have shown his parents with his mother's alias right away. Now I've got to look for her way down in the record. The new way of viewing the record didn't give me any more info than the old way, so I'm not sure why the change.

    Hi @lauracorbin1,

This issue sounds very frustrating. Would you be able to provide the PID for Karl Lusch so we can see the records you are referring too?

@lauracorbin1 Could you please specify which German collection you are currently working with? I don't notice any change in how "View Record" functions in Source Linker.

I noticed the issue within an hour or so of the system being updated.

Problem is that what you used to be able to see in one screen has information now hidden by links to each of the people in the record. To see the information you have to click the link to expand the information. I sent an email to Help, and they suggested using the Open All link, which kind of helps, but unfortunately it does not open all the information because the mother's maiden name is still hidden and you have to click again to show it.

Let's assume I'm working on a marriage that shows the parents. Now, what used to be visible with 0 clicks requires 4 clicks to get the maiden names of the 2 mothers on the record. Or, if I use the Open All link, it requires 3 clicks.

Here's an example of a record with one maiden name hidden for Lisette. No matter what you do it takes 2 clickes now to see her maiden name.

On a related note, I've been heavily linking sources in the Tree for several years. During that time, I consistently see things changed that require more work, and the changes often slow down the loading of a page. I cannot work as fast as I used to because of many of those changes. (not that I'm getting any older!) I understand the changes are not really targeted to me a more "expert" user. Recently, the only 2 changes that have been helpful is the refreshing of the Research Help screen after you link a record and the redesign of the merge process. That one was outstanding for reducing "busy clicking"! Now only if you could speed up record linking for multiple individuals in a record, especially marriages where you have 2 spouses and 2 sets of parents to link.

Here is another one that highlights the frustration of the new design:

    https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QPDT-ZMSH?lang=en

First, not being accustomed to the new view, I assume that I'm looking at Hauss Buber and if I Attach, that's where it will go. Because that is the box with the most information. But no, I'm looking at Jacob Buber (because I typically ignore the very top as it was repetitive information). That's just me having to adjust to the new view.

Tell me, what is the relationship of Anna Catharina Hloan to Jacob Buber? You can't tell. If you Open All (the bottom one, not the top one), it shows information for her but not her relationship. Same for Johann Hloan.

If you do click on Anna Catharina, now you can finally see her relationship to Hauss (husband). I suppose no relationship to Jacob Buber is show because it never showed that before and also his relationship is the Hauss Buber. But again, in the old layout, all of this was very evident in the display of all the record information. Now it's hidden, confusing, and requires clicking around to get a mental idea of the relationships of all the people.

BTW, if you click Attach to Tree, at least that screen is a somewhat diagram/graphical representation of the relationships and is a bit more clear than the current setup.

@lauracorbin1 Many of the issues blamed on Source Linker are actually unrelated. The “View Record” function works as intended and accurately retrieves data from Record Details. The primary problem is that mothers’ surnames—intended to be only maiden names—were mistakenly indexed with both their maiden and husband’s surname. Only the maiden name should be indexed, as indicated in the original documents; users shouldn’t have to use a dropdown menu to locate it.

This mistake appears throughout the film and is further complicated when maiden names are listed as "Also Known As." I discovered that this can be corrected by simply removing the incorrect surname and replacing it with the correct maiden name. However, I encountered a glitch while editing the record for Karl Lusch’s wife—the index still exists, but its permissions were lost, so it doesn’t display. I will work with the engineers to resolve this issue and will also bring up the broader naming concern.

Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention!

@Don whitnah The explanation provided to Laura is relevant to your questions, but the error in this film differs slightly. In Record Details, there is no surname listed, although the correct maiden name does appear in the dropdown menu. This issue arises because the maiden name was indexed as “Also Known As.” Both of these problems will be reported.

Regarding your second point about the speed of record linking, it’s important to consider accuracy over speed. Too many hints are linked without adequate review, especially given the unreliability of AI indexing.

The record referenced in your third post is a good example of the limitations of AI to accurately read names or define relationships. The information for the groom is correct except Hauss should be Hanss. However, for the bride the surname indexed was actually the surname of her first husband:

Anna Catharina Weiland, was married to Johan Kleen, a Reformist schoolmaster. She was legitimate daughter of deceased (no father’s name). I edited the index.

Lastly, I appreciate your insights concerning display of record data and relationships. I also often get confused over whose information I'm looking at!
