Looking for family connections and records – Sona-Bata, Democratic Republic of the Congo (1970s)
Hello everyone,
I am trying to locate information about family members who lived and passed away in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, specifically in the town of Sona-Bata (Kongo-Central Province), during the 1970s.
The family members were Dutch nationals, and I understand that records from this area and time period can be difficult to access. I am hoping to receive guidance on:
- Whether church or parish records might exist for Sona-Bata
- Which diocese or mission would have served this area at the time
- Whether there are FamilySearch collections, microfilms, or affiliate archives that include records for this region
- Any known mission, expatriate, or colonial-era sources that might help in locating family information
I am unable to travel and am relying on remote research, so any advice or direction would be sincerely appreciated.
Thank you very much for your time and assistance.
Kind regards,

@Pretty692 You also might want to explore the FamilySearch Wiki pages for Democratic Republic of the Congo —it’s a great starting point for learning about the region’s genealogical history. It is a helpful guidance on how to research various types of records like birth, marriage, and death.

There is a FIBIS Wiki page Dutch, which is about the Dutch in India, Indonesia etc
However, one of the links may be helpful, and I would suggest emailing this organisation, enquiring whether they have any records relevant to the Dutch in the Congo
CBG : Centrum voor familiegeschiedenis, formerly called Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie (CBG) (Central Bureau for Genealogy). Dutch language. Located in Den Haag in Holland
You can use Google Translate to translate the website, if required, and also to translate your request before you send the email. If I am writing to an overseas organisation, I usually include both my request in English and the Google Translate version.
