I am having difficulty reading a marriage record of Chicago Catholic Church from 1880s. It is a surname. Can anyone direct me for help? I am not sure of the surname of the mother of the groom. (first letter of name could be an H or a K ???)

You might have good results from this website, which shows how different writers in different ages formed cursive letters. https://script.byu.edu/paleography/general/resources/websites. Many of the references lead to FamilySearch articles for your convenience.

Just in case someone can help. The surname of the mother of the groom has been transcribed on Family Search as Kubarte. I do think the first four letters are Kuba. It's the next letter that is the problem. It flows into the Ke at the end. I am wondering whether it's an r or n. The surname Kubanke is found in the region of German speaking Posen in the 19th century. Those are "Ks." The surname of the groom is Groschek. And the bride Kohen (Kuhn). If you know of group that discussions US church record translations please let me know. I would greatly appreciately.

The civil marriage license may be useful, since it is in English.
The parties to the marriage are Joseph Groschek and Polina (Pauline) Kühn

Thanks. Had forgotten that option. Guess I'll have to go that route and hope that the civil records for Cook county at that early date exist and include the name of the parents. I like this forum. Interestingly, not all of the Church records of a similar type do include the name of the parents. Once I get the town, village, or city I can use the images category on Family Search to see if the baptisms have been recorded. Thanks again for your consideration.

They don't include the names of parents. I've sent you the image by private message as we cannot post those restricted records in the Community. Look for a red number on the envelope at the top of the page.

And I'll send you Joseph's death certificate next.

One aside about my research, I have been looking for the place in Posen where the family originated for decades. DNA evidence suggests they came from a place within a hundred mile radius of the city of Poznan. Maybe the city. The Church records have not been indexed to the point where one doesn't have to look through records of particular churches, page by page. I think it unlikely that I can discover the place just with surnames of the parents.

@E.P.T. I've sent you private messages with the civil marriages and the death certificates for both parties to the marriage.
