How to stop GEDCOM contributions to a Utah Pioneer Family

When I see GEDCOM in the reason box, I know it is usually going to be a bad experience. Recently, Ordinances Ready was pulling up people in our pioneer family instead of the Danish names my husband and I have submitted. Looking closer, these names were children born after the mother's death, husbands that were contemporaries, but the the correct husband, additional wives that were having children at the same time as the first wife.

Twice I reached out to Lorianneries1 to explain she needed to stop because it takes time to correct these error in lines that have already been carefully researched. I personally researched the 7 Ane Larsens married to the 5 Christian Christiansens in Vejle Denmark adding sources. This is Lorianneries1 reply:

"Hello. please let me explain what I am doing. It is a large undertaking. My grandmother and mother have been working on our family history for as long as I can remember. My mother is past the ability to continue. But I know its been researched. I've been given a thumb disk with the entire history which she had on Roots magic. I downloaded the work into Family Search, over 9,000 names and it listed all the information and I added them one by one. I've been doing this work since last February. It's been alot. I have only merged when I am absolutely certain they are the same person. Sometimes they are the same person, but with a different wife and children. I do not merge these. Once I have all these on our personal family tree, I can research certificates and such. Right now I am just getting them on the tree for a base. It's so nice when others working on my family come forward, the puzzle comes together nicely."

FamilySearch, please remove the option to upload a GEDCOM and sync it. The individuals doing this are not looking at sources, they are not doing research, but as stated above, using their Grandmother's Roots Magic. Lorianneries1 is messing up 9,000 names in the Family Tree, without a clue of the duplicate baptisms, endowments and sealings she is creating.

When I went to bed at midnight, after 5 hours of cleaning up after others, I felt discouraged and angry with FamilySearch for letting such an individual do so much damage, quickly, and carelessly.

Hi - You will be thrilled to know that it is no longer possible to transfer a GEDCOM file to the FamilySearch public tree. GEDCOM files can still be loaded but they become a private, editable tree. Below is a link to the overall description of this feature. Just be aware that there may still be some previously loaded GEDCOM files that are still being added to the public tree.

About the "new" GEDCOM upload. Is this synced, merging people into the public tree without viewing the documents, warnings there?

For right now, there is no merging or importing from the GEDCOM created tree into the public tree. They talk about that being a future enhancement. If and when that comes, it almost always requires a close look at each profile before moving it to the public tree.

    Wayland K Adams,

This is the problem. I have an individual adding thousands of names to FamilySearch. What I have seen are unsourced marriages added to pioneer Danish lines. Here are her words:

"I have already added over 7,000 names my mother gave me to Family Search. This was a ton of work on my part. About a year's worth. This was not just a GED COM. This was a thumb drive of my family tree, work done through generations. The work was all done on a program called Roots Magic. I do not have access to that program. I took the Roots Magic work and put it onto Family Search, adding every name, one by one. I matched where I knew it was a match, and did not match if there was not enough information to match or any questions. In the process, if there was no match, Family Search prompted me to add. It either brings up one side with all the indivividual's information with a prompt to add, or a side by side detailed information My mother's, plus what Family Search found as a possible match. My mother gave me 9,000 plus names total. I went through them one by one, with consultants if I had any issues, on site at Family Search. I began this work all the way back in February I think? This is my family tree. Not just names from a GED com. My mother's, and grandmother's life's work. My mother can no longer continue this. This includes maternal, paternal, and adoptive/ sealed stepfather's lines. I am simply putting into Family Search what they did, so I can then move forward. The process does not let me see certificates, etc. At this stage it is taking the names into FS. I still have 2,000 plus invalid or living names. I'm going to only add those living relatives I know. As I go back into Family Search, the program will show me possible certificates and such that I can link, and I will be able to learn about these ancestors.

Again this is the lifelong work of my family, that my mother has asked me to move from Roots Magic onto Family Search. The Sorensen Line is Denmark. My mother's paternal line. The work was done on site at Family Search, and with help from consultants, as I am learning how to be a consultant myself. I think it would help for you to know what I saw as I added names. The drive, when I put my family's research to move to family Search shows me page by page a list of names. When I click on a person, either it comes up one page to add to Family Search on my tree, or there is a side by side comparison, as a possible match. If all the information matched, I marked it. If I had any questions, I asked a seasoned consultant. All the work on my end was done on site at Family Search. So I did nothing more than follow Family Search prompts. My mother can no longer do this work, so it is now my work to research and get my family's work done. I am learning much in the process. It's a lot. That is what all I could see on this part of the work the just getting all people into Family Search. I cannot see the certificates etc. Now that they are entered into Family Search, I can.

I'm adding now the names I know of living descendants. It's not 9,000 names I've added. It's 13,000 names. My mother gave me over 16,000 total."

I'm asking a FamilySearch member to call this FamilySearch Center or this Bishop and see if anyone is checking on the 13,000 names she has added. You can do that. This person is creating bigger messes faster than can be cleaned up. She cannot even use RootsMagic. How can she have the Executive level of thinking to be working in the tree. You can accelerate this problem to someone who can investigate what is happening.

The reason you should is because too many researchers are tired of cleaning up this type of stuff on FamilySearch. At RootsTech they say we will start removing privileges for people who consistently cause problems. I have family members texting me, [name removed for privacy] , there are no sources, I don't know how to clean this mess up. These are computer smart people who work and should be spending their time undoing these messes.

PLEASE. Accelerate this problem to someone who knows how to deal with someone who is intellectually challenged.

@M G Thomsen thank you very much for you feedback. I have escalated this issue to the engineering team.
