I'm sure this has been asked, but I couldn't find it in a search. I know you can attach photos and documents in your genealogy software, but I'd love for all of that stuff to be in one place, so I know where it is and how to back it up. I was using Evernote, but I took a break and now am back and finding it's very different, so I'm looking to change. What services to y'all use for this? I guess I'm just wondering about cloud storage, and maybe how you organize these items? RIght now, I have folders by surnames, then within those folders individuals, then anything attached to those individuals. Thanks for any help!

Hello @Stewart Harvey, I use a similar folder structure to yours, but on OneDrive (to which I have the lowest level of business subscription, which gives me access to Office on my PC plus 2TB of cloud storage, all for under £10 a month). OneDrive allows me to work with the files and folders in the normal Windows manner, but each file takes up space on my computer hard disk only when I've worked on it in the last day or so. I also maintain a local backup (on an external hard disk) which is in its turn backed up, that copy being kept elsewhere.

For me, it is important I use my own standard when naming a file — for example: "obit- Jerred,FredH @ Pardeeville WI @ 1975" — so that I can search for all the obits or all the Pardeeville records, or Fred Jerred. This naming convention (type, person, place, date) works for most things.

I place the actual item in the most obvious folder and make an alias if I need/want it to be showing in another folder. (I am using the MacOS, but I think aliases can also be done on Windows OS.)
