I am looking for marriage and parents for William Evans MYVG-BP3. We know he married Sarah MYVP-M3C but can find no further information. We have checked FindMyPast, Wiki, and Ancestry. We appreciate any help that can be offered here.

@maemargaretevans1 Hoping you can get some assistance with your GGG. I searched the usual places and found only one possible for you on Ancestry.com. Of course, this is a site that requires a fee; however, if you haven't had a recent account, you can get a free trial to look up your information. Looks like you found the parent of William, PSCJ-ZQK.

Hi @maemargaretevans1 there is a marriage between a Williams Evans and a Sarah Wilson in Berriew, Montgomeryshire in 1826 which may be what @sc woz was referencing (?), but that is not this couple as that Sarah (nee Wilson) in traceable in concurrent census records to the Sarah and William you are enquiring about, which rules out the match.

I did notice that I had made some minor contributions to this tree earlier in the year and to refresh my memory I traced the tree down a couple of generations. This has lead to the discovery of some fairly significant inconstancies and conflations, which may be why you are having trouble locating records.

From what I can see the issues start with Margaret Jane Evans 9MV2-3CF. That Margaret Jane Evans who married David Thomas Evans and immigrated to the US, has been conflated with Margaret Jane Evans daughter of Thomas Evans MYFG-MW2, son of the William and Sarah of your inquiry.

The confusion seems to have arisen via the incorrect attribution of the 1901 and 1891 census records.

The Margaret Jane Evans of the above pedigree was born in Llanfair, Montgomeryshire about 1875 whist, according to her immigration record, Margaret Jane Evans, wife of David Thomas Evans, was born about 1875/6 in Swansea (Glamorganshire).

The Margaret Jane of Llanfair is single in 1901, whist the marriage of Margaret Jane Evans and David Thomas Evans is alleged to have occurred in Galmorganshire in 1897. Subsequently their sons Gilbert (b.1897) and Graham (b.1900) should also appear in the 1901 census.

A little digging uncovered the correct 1901 census record for Margaret Jane and David Thomas Evans boarding with their son Graham in the house of a Margaret Burns in Swansea, Glamorganshire. A further search uncovers elder son Gilbert in the household of widow Jane Lewis, in Glyncorrwg, roughly 20 miles inland from Swansea. Also in the house is Jane Lewis' son David Evans.

Margaret Jane was recorded as "Maggie" at the time of her marriage in 1897. There is a civil registration record in the second quarter in the district of Swansea (Vol 11A, Page 1363).

In 1891 she appears in the census again as Maggie living with her mother Jane Evans, a widow, and her brothers William and David (the same David as the one mentioned in the 1901 census above, clearly Jane remarried and was widowed a second time between census years). Also in the house is a Margaret Matthews, very likely Margaret Jane's grandmother. Note that Mathews is the name listed as mother's Maiden name on Margaret Jane Evans death record source.

In 1881 she appears as Margaret J Evans, still in Swansea.

A GRO search confirms the familial match, as mother's maiden name is listed as Matthews for all three children's birth registration entries:

Margaret Jane (GRO Reference: 1875  J Quarter in SWANSEA  Volume 11A  Page 723)

William (GRO Reference: 1878  S Quarter in SWANSEA  Volume 11A  Page 649)

David (GRO Reference: 1882  S Quarter in SWANSEA  Volume 11A  Page 645)

I've gone ahead and made the relevant adjustments in the attach sources, so you will be able to peruse them for yourself.

But in light of that, you will see there are flow on ramifications to other relationships and you may no longer feel the need to pursue the marriage record for William and Sarah as they are not, in fact, connected to the pedigree I believe you are interested in.

Apologies if this has thrown a spanner in your research. I hope having the correct records and relationships to pursue will soften the surprise of having your linage change suddenly, and it will be taken in the spirit of good collaboration and accurate historic recording with which it is intended.
