imageFamilySearch Family Tree Merge 2025 Update

If you’ve spent much time working in the FamilySearch Family Tree, you’ve probably encountered duplicates—two profiles that represent the same person. Since the goal of the Family Tree is to have only one profile per person, Family Tree offers the ability to merge duplicates.

I believe this type of side-by-side merge will be most helpful and improve accuracy. I look forward to more mobile application enhancements.

This seems better. I noticed that the resulting person has a new number. I am wondering about temple work that was done for the other numbers, especially if not all ordinances have been completed, but cards may already be printed? I had a situation where two who were not the same person had been merged and then later separated. I found that temple work that I had done years ago ended up attached to the wrong person.

I like the side by side merge format to be used as a starting point for me. I have been burned to many times making a quick merge especially if one of the individuals has very little information given. Names is some areas and times a frequently used by multiple people such that it takes considerable research to tell which is which. I ran across a marriage record where the groom had the exact same name, was about the same age and in close to the same location as the individual I was researching. In reviewing the marriage record more closely, I discovered that the groom and my individual were both at the the wedding. My individual was brother to the best man and cousin to the groom and both had been named after their grandfather.

Do the side by side displays let you check the sources, memories, ordinances, and other details or just the information on the screen?

The example with Matthew is confusing.

The inconsistency: First names are different. Both have Matthew as the first name. Thomas is the second name.

    1. Are 1st and 2nd names treated as ONE UNIT?

    2. If 1st and 2nd name are treated as ONE UNIT then the error message is not valid and is misleading because it says FIRST NAMES are different when they are both first names are Matthew.

What did I miss? I appreciate any help!
