CETs _ Upload a GEDCOM for the Tree, and create a group to work in ... What's this all about?

What's this all about?

I'm not a regular user. Someone was helping at Church and noticed this on my account

image.png image.png

They are a regular experienced user. But it does not display on their account

image.png

They suggest it may be a new feature that is being progressively rolled out.

What does it mean?

How do we use it?

What group to work in?

Has this something to do with Family Groups?

Any knowledge or thoughts?

Thanks

    Thanks

I have no idea about GEDCOM stuff.

And, I certainly did not ask for early access to CET.

I will pass this onto those at Church.

Hopefully, some at Church may find such useful.

    Again, Thanks.

CETs is one of the projects being tested in Labs . It is explained fully here and how you can apply for the test!. I was selected for the test. It worked smoothly but my GEDCOM was a product of information that was copied and pasted over time from various sources. There were errors due to not all dates, etc., not uploading completely. It required a lot of corrections. I may delete and upload a new one when it is finally released. They have been working out bugs reported.

I tried to keep my answer simple since I didn't want to confuse you. As I understand the CET is a step forward to providing a place where individuals can have a personal tree (by GEDCOM) and create a "group" of family and friends to work on the personal tree. The owner would control who can change information, Unlike the world-wide tree the group of searchers would be far smaller but there would be control over who can make changes on the tree. The other benefit is easy access to FamilySearch information. I haven't kept up on the progress but if you were looking at the experiments in Labs you got a feel for what is going on. And these are just the ones they have opened to the public to try. There are 3-4 AI experiments that provide new information that was extremely hard to find previously!

    @IrvS

    Thanks for that.
I am an inexperienced User. When the member from Church and I saw the CETs appears on the dropdown under Family Tree link on the Top Menu for Me in FamilySearch we were both taken back and confused. Neither of us has seen or had any knowledge of it.
Since the advice from @Lars van Ravenzwaaij we have found FamilySearch Labs and the various Experiments, one of which is User Owned Tree Feature (CETs) which is the Early Access portal to which you have indicated.
We also found this Knowledge Article about the new GEDCOM upload experience.
It is interesting that I did not request early access to CETs. But it has been suggested that some users may have just been given such access on a processive rollout basis without request.
    Again Thanks.

@Jenny.B @IrvS Thank you both for your feedback. As an experienced user, @IrvS would be able to offer feedback and insight to the engineering team developing CET by joining the CET Feedback - Early Access Group in the Community.

@Jenny.B As a new user to FamilySearch, it might be best if you became more familiar with its features. Early Access CET is early access, not even in Beta yet and still has many issues to be worked on by the engineering team. If you go to the Community Group referenced above, you can see the announcements listing which issues have been reported and which issues have been resolved.

I am uncertain how you gained access without specifically requesting it. Experienced users have been invited to join this experiment. If some of your member friends with FS experience are interested in testing this experiment, they can apply for access within FamilySearch Labs.

Again, thank you for your interest and your feedback.

@Jenny.B I hope I didn't give you the impression that I was suggesting that you should get involved in CET. I was only trying to answer your questions. There is so much to learn about genealogy, it could take a while to be able to understand terminology alone! The step-by-step guidance given on the home page is a great place to start. When I started 40 years ago, I thought I would be done in a year. Now I know I will never really be done! Last week, I found information on my great grandparents that I never knew. I was using Full Page Search in Labs! The thrill was like a kid at Christmas! You will have many moments like that if you keep at it!

    Thanks.

We have passed the details about CETs onto our Stake Presidency to pass onto the Bishoprics and Presidencies of our Stake - for those interested in such.

I will leave all this to those with the experience.

    Again, thanks.

@Jenny.B I am wondering if you received an invitation to join another member's CET. Perhaps from another family member interested in family history? Do you have a family group tree? You can read a knowledge article about CET by following this link:

@Jenny.B Thank you for passing the word about CET's. It would be helpful to pass along each of the experiments in "Labs". I have found that most FS Users don't even realize that the "labs" experiments are available. Having users test each lab and offer feedback help the engineering team work out the "bugs" before the feature is put into production.

@mynameistk FS already has some information on the home page about the Labs. It would be great also to publicise recently-fully-live functionality such as DQS or Family Group Trees that posters here frequently seem unaware of.

I did not request early access to CETs.
I did not received an invitation to join another/any user's CETs.
I do not have a Family Group Tree in FamilySearch.
I have been shown the Knowledge Article but do not really understand it.
I only Use Family Tree through a friend at Church.

@Jenny.B one thing that occurs to me, is there any possibility that the PC was accidentally signed in to FamilySearch as your friend's account rather than yours when this first happened? That could be an explanation.

Can you still see the CET option on your Family Tree menu, and can you see it from everywhere?

    Yes to both.
eg. The Second Line Menu - Right Hand Side. Last option after Family Groups. But before Help Others.

I have applied to join the CET Lab and if successful will poke around to see what could possibly have caused the strange behaviour you are experiencing.

@Jenny.B I'm sorry that this seems like an inquisition. Your situation struck a nerve with some directly involved in the efforts to make CETs work without bugs and some curious. I am thrilled that you let your leaders know about CETs. I hope more people will become involved. I also hope that you and your friend will investigate the use of the other LABS. They are easily accessible on the main page of FamilySearch, right side or click LABS above. Also encourage others use Research Wiki and FamilySearch Catalog. Both are in the SEARCH dropdown. You can find "YouTube" videos on many topics, also! You will find all of this the more you use it! I hope you enjoy helping others find their ancestors as you find your own!

    @MandyShaw1 regarding your comment above,

    image.png

the appropriate place to post this idea is in the category "Ask A Question" and in the subcategory "Suggest an idea". That will go to the appropriate team to review your suggestion. By posting it in this comment, it will not be seen by that team.

@mynameistk Thanks for that very valid point - I have added it to the New Home Page Feedback Group instead, since (unlike Suggest an Idea) that will allow other posters to see it (plus any FS responses it may receive).

I have been searching for CET and would like to try it. I have a lot of colonial ancestors and continually have people messing up their families. I understand CET would help me to keep the families correct and the temple work connected. I am frustrated that people do not look at sources or notes before they merge cousins or other people to my ancestors and messing up the work that has been done. People do not look at the proofs.

@dhirschi08 I have not set up a CET yet, but I think they are open for every one now. Start by going to Search > Genealogies:

    Screenshot 2025-10-12 at 4.07.14 PM.png

The scroll to the very bottom of the page:

    Screenshot 2025-10-12 at 4.07.28 PM.png

And click on Upload Your Individual Tree:

    Screenshot 2025-10-12 at 4.07.53 PM.png

Keep in mind that when you create a CET tree, you are creating all new duplicates of your family and these have no connection to their profiles in Family Tree. Because these are duplicates, these profiles have no temple work on them. That only appears in Family Tree. So to keep temple work unconfused you will still need to work to maintain their Family Tree profiles. But ideally, since you will have a handy reference version, your work in Family Tree will be a little easier. Also, temple work cannot be requested on CET profiles. View these CET trees as editable Pedigree Resource File records, not as a replacement for Family Tree.

I just did those instructions and it just appears as the old version Pedigree Resource File, so I guess the info on the photo above about not doing that isn't accurate. Upload, compare, view. I can then only get a list of people and use them to change people on the world tree from the View option. I was assuming I'd be able to manage a private tree separate from world tree.

I do not have CET in the dropdown under Family Tree in order to access it in the new format. I've just spent an hour trying to figure this out. I have created Family Group, but since there is no tree to invite them to, that's irrelevant. It may be because I'm identified as in Australia. I've had this happen before with different systems within FS. My home landing page is different and now it seems we aren't being included in this new tree option either.

Can you let us know when this will actually be implemented across to all members?

    Thanks

@JanW2 Sign in on Fs. Klick Family Tree > Tree. In the showing submenu the entry for CETs is on the right hand side.

    FYI.
CETs still DO NOT show/display for All Users - still NOT Automatic.
CETs DO NOT even show up on FamilySearch Labs any longer.
Suggest that the ONLY way to access CETs and activate them now is to access them the way that was provided by @Gordon Collett above.

I found when experimenting a couple of weeks ago that the old PRF based gedcom upload still worked as before from Genealogies. However as of right now that same route leads me to a CET import. Could we have clarity on this situation, please? Is there a gradual global rollout which is as yet incomplete? Is there meant to be any route at all to doing an 'old' gedcom import? (I am in the UK, if it's relevant.)
