I believe I am correct in my answer. A Research group focuses on things like specific languages, geographic areas, e.g. Poland, England, Germany, etc. or on specific genealogial issues that people are having problems with such as adoption research. You can find a large list of all the Research groups at FamilySearch Wiki: Genealogy Research Groups

A FamilySearch Sponsored group is usually supervised by a FamilySearch representative.

Neither group is private, all are open to the FamilySearch family.

Many of the FamilySearch-sponsored groups are Research Groups. Each group has a description of the group at the top of the group page.

FamilySearch Groups are monitored by familysearch.org. The others are monitored by private individuals. I have heard that if there is no activity on private research groups that they will remove them from the community. This community page has been set up for people to interact with others to help all connect to get the best information in their searches. This forum is being watched over and changed at times to meet this need.
