How to record variant surname

My surname, Schwonke, is of German origin, and my ancestors lived in the province of West Prussia. The earliest written records of the family are from the Prussian civil and church records. There were many variants of the name recorded in these records, including Schwanke, Shurncke, Schwoncke, Szworck, etc. My question is how to properly record the ancestor’s surname . The method I have followed is to use Schwonke and identify the recorded variant as an alternate name. Is this proper standard procedure?
