FamilySearch's Family Tree is built with three simple items: a person, a couple relationship, and a parent-child relationship. You can have as many of each of these as you like.

So for your example, you would have the person with the divorced spouse who share a child:

    • Create the person
    • Add their spouse, which will create the person profile for that first spouse, and a couple relationship between them.
    • On that couple relationship, add a Marriage event (if you know it), and a Divorce event
    • Add a child to them, which will create the person profile for that child, and a parent-child relationship between the child and the two parents.

    Then create the second family:

    • Add that second spouse to the original person, which will create the person profile for that second spouse, and a couple relationship between them.
    • On that couple relationship, add a Marriage event (if you know it)
    • Add a child to them, which will create the person profile for that child, and a parent-child relationship between the child and those two parents.

If you need help with more specifics, we're happy to help, but that's the overview of what needs to be done.

How to do this is pretty straight forward on a person's Profile page by just clicking the appropriate links found there. So I've been suspicious for some time now that some people try to work exclusively on one of the pedigree views to build a family and that is why they can't figure out how to add more spouses or sets of parents.

While you can add children, one spouse and one set of parents to a person in the Landscape and Portrait view pedigrees, you cannot add additional spouses or parents on either of those and you cannot add additional family at all on any of the other pedigree views.

When you have explored the Profile page under the Details tab and followed Alan's instructions on using that page, the family structure under the Family Members section will look like this:

Here you can see the various Add Child, Add Spouse, and Add Parents links.

I created this image in the beta version of FamilySearch which is a sandbox like environment where you can play around and experiment without making any changes to the actual Family Tree database. It is located at https://beta.familysearch.org

Since you are just testing out FamilySearch's Family Tree you might want to spend some time in that beta site first. Because there is one thing that is very important for new users of Family Tree to understand: You do not create a personal family tree there like you do at almost every other website. Here, you are working as a contributor to the one, universal, wiki-style, open edit tree in which all of us users work together to have a single, best profile for every deceased per who can be identified. All users can edit any and all deceased people. (Due to privacy considerations, any living people you enter can only be seen and edited by you.) The entire tree and all data you add to this common tree belongs to FamilySearch, not any one user.

Two consequence of this are that if you enter "practice" data just to see what you can do, those entries are there for the entire user base to see and that if you create a profile and another user makes any edits to the profile, you cannot delete it if you intended to come back and do so.
