Locating Leon Cherry's Birth record in Trois-Rivières, Canada, New France

I have Leon Cherry's naturalization record, but not very good at locating birth records from Canada. His naturalization record is at the following linkhttps://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:66MM-JJVH?lang=en

If you would assist me in locating or can provide direction to locate records. Thank you.

    Hi @Wendy Ann Lee. This is a great question for the Canada Research group. If you post this again there, they can best help you.

    @Wendy Ann Lee

    The records are likely available on both Ancestry and FamiySearch. Ancestry has more of them indexed while the images on FamilySearch are far superior. I usually find a record first on Ancestry, to know the exact parish/location, and then it is much easier to browse for the record on FamilySearch.

    As @GFre indicated, the group for Canada Research is the best place to ask. You will see several recent examples where I've used that same process to locate a record.

    Bonne chance!

    I'm guessing this is your Leon Cherry: https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/details/9XFS-C5C

    As you already know, he was born (according to this profile and his naturalization document) in Trois-Rivières, East Canada, which at that point was not part of New France, but was a province of Great Britain. It was ceded to Great Britain in the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Here's a great article about the history of Quebec: https://www.britannica.com/place/Quebec-province/History

    Trois-Rivières is now part of the Saint-Maurice County of Quebec, so here is the FamilySearch wiki page for that county. https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Saint-Maurice_County,_Quebec,_Canada_Genealogy

    As you look for your ancestor, you might want to take into consideration that although Leon was born into a part of Great Britain, the community around him was still french. His name might have been anglicized when he immigrated, so you might want to consider other versions of his last name as you look for records. Microsoft copilot suggests these alternatives: Chéry, Charest, Chéry, Chéris, or even Charrier. There could be other versions as well.

    Best of luck with your search!
