My wife had been doing research for years using the Italian films. Now all of a sudden the films she had access for a long time are not accessible. Are owners suddenly not letting people access them?

Contracts with record holders often change. In the Italian Research group, there have been several relevant threads in recent months.

@George Ezell Legge As Aine indicates, there was a major update regarding contractual permissions accessing Italian records. This is a link to an important post in the group Aine has pointed you to.

I imagine that there is a bit of a story behind this change. I wonder who got angry or possessive regarding something?

Sometimes, a change of this type can signal an upcoming online offering from the record holder.

For example, FamilySearch was no longer permitted to allow access to Irish vital records when the Irish government website came online. Sadly, that means we no longer have access to the deaths from 1864 to 1870 because those are still not on the Irish site but were available on FS.
