Pre-1871 German place names are missing from standard places in Family Search. Frequently, the 1871-1918 names are identical save for the lack of "Germany" in the place name. This doesn't apply to post 1945 locations because the State and County names differ.

Create a way to search places and date ranges by historically correct names. Just searching Poland dosen't work. They were divide and boarders changed. It didn't even exist for 128 years. The Kashubians are a Lechitic (West Slavic) ethnic group native to the historical region of Pomerania, including its eastern part called Pomerelia, in north-central Poland. Their settlement area is referred to as Kashubia. They are a distinct group with a distinct culture and have their own language called the Kashubian language.

It would be helpful to put in a place and date range and search records in the historically correct place instead of being redirect to the wrong place for the time.

Searching a place with the generalized search term of Poland with the wrong name, the wrong dates of existence makes about as much sense as searching for the United States of America in 1000 BCE.

Just because Germany made it illegal to speak any language than German when they were trying to take over Poland does not mean the records will be found in Germany in German with German names. In fact the area being taken over primarily spoke Kushubian and NOT German at all. FamilySearch needs to do a better job of helping guide people to the correct country and the places that existed at a certain time in history. Searching for ancestors inthe wrong place causes inaccuacies and is very frustrating. If FamilySearch wants accurate entries with strong sources for other people to see where the information came from, they must allow for users to use the historically correct places names.

@Mary Ellen Wilhelm marywilhelm12 yahoo.com Were you able to add your historical Poland place to the FamilySearch Places area? I see there is a page for Pomerelia here: https://www.familysearch.org/en/research/places/?focusedId=10325808&text=pomerelia

You are knowledgeable about the area, so please use "improve this place" if you have more information to add.
