Help to find physical location based on digital folder record (Portugal, Registro Civil, 1437-2023)

Hi all,

I would greatly appreciate any help finding more information about the physical location of the following file. It may relate to my GGF, Manoel de Souza (G4N3-FLZ), as the mother and father's names are a match. I suspect it is in a parish or government body in Braga, Portugal.

"Portugal, Registro Civil, 1437-2023", FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6BGM-BVBX : Tue Oct 08 22:38:21 UTC 2024), Entry for Manoel de Souza and Domingos de Souza.

Image Group Number (DGS) or Film Number: 004468693_004_M98G-TJQ

Image Number: 13
Originating System: CAI:I2S

It seems that this image or film combines several books or files, making it difficult to determine the exact location of the original record.

ps: I'm trying to find as many Portuguese documents for Manoel de Souza (G4N3-FLZ) as possible. I would also appreciate any other leads.

Thank you very much,

Daniel

According to the FamilySearch catalog, DGS 4468693 covers marriages 1666-1824 for Nossa Senhora da Graça (Moncarapchao, Faro), Portugal.
The record you want is in section 1, image 13, so very near the front of the DGS.

Thanks! It is probably a false match. Although I can't see the images (they are locked), the dates and locations don't match.

What puzzled me was that Braga records were also showing in the same catalogue:

If the cataloging information that Áine pointed out is accurate, then this entry is about a century too early to be your Manoel. Yes, the names are very similar, but that's not enough.

Normally, I'd recommend asking location-specific questions in a location-specific Community group, but there doesn't seem to be an English-speaking one for Portugal. I guess you can ask in the Portuguese-language group; you wouldn't be the first to post there in English. The access message for the film is the sort that usually indicates material that's on a different website, often paywalled; hopefully, someone in that group will know where.

(Regarding similarity of names not being enough: I have multiple instances just among my direct ancestors of two different couples with exactly the same names, and I don't even bother to keep track of all the false hints I've dismissed with more identically-named family groups who aren't related.)

Thanks! I'll try to find more information in the Portuguese group.

The catalog record provided by Áine says "Microfilme de manuscritos no Arquivo Distrital de Faro, e no Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo".

Arquivo Distrital de Faro has a Search Portal https://digitarq.adfar.arquivos.pt

Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo has a website https://antt.dglab.gov.pt and also a digital Search portal https://digitarq.arquivos.pt

Thanks! Unfortunately, my original ask was probably based on a false lead. The family is from the Braga/Minho area. I could not find a similar match there for "de Souza" family including Manoel (son), Domingos (father) and Anna (mother).

How do you know Manoel de Souza was from Braga?

I found 2 documents of the arrival of Manoel, Lina and their (at the time) 5 children, they were coming from Montevideo were they stayed only 8 days.

Portuguese parish records are available online, the easiest way to find them is this site:

Thank you very much! It is of great help! I was looking for the arrival records for quite some time, but it seems it was not indexed for public searching (or I was missing something in the process).

Concering your question about Braga: so far my only reference is based in oral reports from family members. Here is all I know about him:

Manoel de Souza, son of (João) Domingos de Souza and Anna de Souza, born in the north of Portugal, probably between the years 1875 and 1885 (most likely 1879 or 1880). Oral reports indicate that the birth took place in the Braga region more specifically. He married Lina Martinez (or Martins) probably in Vigo (San Pedro de Sardoma), Galicia, Spain, which is close to Braga. Manoel and Lina had at least two children still in Galicia, born in Vigo or, more specifically, San Pedro de Sardoma, from 1899 onwards. In this way, the marriage must have taken place in 1897 or 1898. After the birth of the second child in Galicia, they moved to Buenos Aires (Argentina) and later to Brazil, where they had more children. Manoel de Souza died in the mid-1940s (most likely between 1944 and 1946) at the Juqueri Hospital, but so far it has not been possible to find his death certificate with an exact date.

What I'm trying to find: Manoel's birth, marriage and death records.

ps: without his birth data and parish location, I guess I can't find it on Tombo's website.
