I would find it a tremendous blessing if Familysearch would notify users by default (with the ability to opt in or out, naturally) by email when there's a new unread message waiting, since I send a lot of messages to people whose lines of research converge with mine - often, people who haven't been here in years.

@John8310 This is a great idea. The best place to send this is the Suggest An Idea zone. That way the engineers working on this product will be notified of your idea.
