Did you know that Louisiana Naturalizations allow sex based on the word (his)?

Look at Example # 1. I was told NEVER to do that before.

    If it's "his", it's Male, just like "her" is female. If it's John Doe with no pronoun/relationship/sex indicators, you'll still will mark it BLANK. In the example, the word "his" is handwritten; if it had been "her," the applicant would be female based on "her." This does not extend to pre-printed forms, where the default sex was "his," because 98% of applicants prior to 1922 were male.

    In all the years I've been indexing, we've used pronouns to determine sex. The field help for that field says: "Index the sex only if it was specifically recorded or you can tell what it was from relationship terms, such as "son" or "daughter," titles or terms, or other evidence in the language. (except, as erutherford says, the pronoun is a generic one preprinted on the form)
